Support / Re: Import from IMDB Not Working
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:24:09 am »
I don't remember now, but when I was checking my own results, I wondered if you were getting the main page credits from the redesigned site.

I set my IMDb preferences on the site to show the redesigned pages, but the same number of credits are displayed on the main page there as on the main page of the old design for http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103085.  There was a difference for http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258058--15 on the main page with the new design and a larger number on the old design's page--so the new design cuts the main page's list shorter than the old design.  But since PVD only imports 2 (not 15) cast members for that movie, it doesn't seem like PVD is importing credits from the new design's main page, unless its parsing it incorrectly.  But the fact that unchecking "Download full credits" causes the full credit list to be imported indicates that PVD is parsing the page correctly.

Do you have "Download full credits" checked in the plugin's options?  (and 'from main page only' unchecked)  I found the missing-credits problem occurs when its checked and doesn't when its unchecked.

I also get only 2 cast members imported into PVD for that movie with the new version.  For this one

Godfathers of Hong Kong
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103085

I get 11 out of 16.

And for this one, PVD freezes (maxes out a CPU core) and I have to force close it when it gets to the cast list:

Yep, it is an image file: the poster downloaded from IMDb for the last movie I imported data from.  Don't know why that would be.  I created a new record for another movie to see if it would happen again, and page.html became the poster for that one too.

When the next failure occurs, check the "page.html" file in the PVD installation folder.  It should contain the full move or person page requested...including </html> at the end.  If it doesn't then the problem is with the server (or PVD not checking for a complete page...your choice).  If it is complete, then maybe the download isn't completed before the plug-in starts processing it.

I will, but I checked page.html now after a successful import for comparison purposes and its just a bunch of symbols like

I'm a Jdownloader user as well, but with Firefox -> view selection source, I can copy a section of links to the clipboard...Rdesc automatically parses the clipboard and pops up the links, saving a couple of mouse clicks (Jdownloader requires you to manually add the links).  It a minor quibble, but it's the reason that I always try to use Rdesc first for common sites (rapidshare, hotfile, megaupload).  For other sites, I go straight to Jdownloader where I'm more sure of support for the site.

JDownloader monitors the clipboard as well.  I use it that way normally to copy big batches of links and they show up in JDownloader's Linkgrabber immediately.  Make sure you've got the button for clipboard monitoring selected on the toolbar (It looks like a clipboard.)  The only problem I've ever had with it is that is an occasional file will fail a CRC check, but one of the suggestions on the forum was to set maximum connections to 1 (in the bottom bar), which I've done, and it hasn't happened since.

Another thing I particularly like about it is that when there are mirrors of the same file (i.e. the same file on rapidshare, hotfile, and megaupload), you just copy all of them to the clipboard and it automatically recognizes this and will download part1 from rapidshare, part2 from megaupload, and part3 from hotfile simultaneously.  Haven't tested this yet with RDesc.  Some hosts are better than others, unless you have paid accounts with them.  Megaupload is fast and allows a lot of downloading before making you take a break.  Hotfile and others have unbreakable (so far) captchas, so you have to type them in manually whenever their turn comes in the download list.

It also automatically extracts RAR files, even password protected ones if you enter the password when you set a container to downloading, and even extracts RAR files within RAR files, if there are any.

For the case where there's links instead of plain text and the anchor text is not the URL, faster than going to the page source is to use the Firefox addon Multi Links to copy the URLs to the clipboard by dragging a selection rectangle around them on the page itself.

A new issue with IMDb import: Original Language field is filled in with the Production Company, or "Studio" as its called in PVD, instead.  The Studio field is correct, so both fields get filled in with the same thing.  Examples:

"Leaving Me, Loving You" http://imdb.com/title/tt0386590/, "China Film"
"D.I.E." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1517119/, "Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB)"

Removing my login data for IMDb under Preferences and restarting didn't help.

Looking through all the languages in the multi-select list, there were only a few Studios, and the earliest of them was added on 9/20/2010 7:55:06 PM PST, so the problem started before then.

And TweakMDb is just a collection of Greasemonkey and Stylish scripts, so it's in even worse trouble.

I hadn't noticed that every single one of them is, but now that I know, maybe I'll just install the ones I like as scripts and uncheck them in TweakMDb (which I already did for IMDb Movie Collection Manager), as there can sometimes be a significant delay for new versions of addons to make it through the approval process, although its safer to wait.

Ok, I see your point.  Here's my log, and it looks the same as yours; I just also included the part from the loading of the program until the problem.  I tried running the plugin on one movie prior, but its data was already complete, which I assume is why nothing downloaded.  I Ctrl+deleted the only-the-URL-filled-in movie afterward, restarted PVD, and repeated the exact steps, but couldn't make it do it again.

Support / Re: Import from IMDB Not Working

There are a number of different issues at play here.

First, the error "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable" will always (it seems) intermittently occur. I updated 819 movies last night. In the 90 minutes that took, there were 11 of these—causing the update of 11 records to fail. A 1.3% failure rate for a Silent mode operation is fine.  But if the same error is encountered when not in Silent mode, the failure will look like any other.

Don't know what you mean by that last sentence.  The 503 error is identifiable when not in silent mode because of the dialog box that pops up.  In silent mode, presumably it wouldn't pop up, though I've never tried it.  This new problem has no popup; it just starts to download and then quits with only the IMDb URL filled in.

This is why I recommend always using the -debug switch—so the log is available to determine the cause of any failure.

I finally figured out how to do this with the portable version of PVD.   If you're starting the program with PVD_Portable.exe, pvdconf.ini will be stored in the Data folder.  But PVD_Portable.exe launches viddb.exe in portable mode, and that's the program you have to apply the -debug switch to.  So you have to create a new shortcut to viddb.exe with the -debug and -portable switches.  But when you do, it creates a new pvdconf.ini file in viddb.exe's folder and you lose your settings.  So you have to replace that with the pvdconf.ini from the Data folder.  Next time the IMDb problem happens, I'll post a log.

Second, there is an IMDb site redesign going on.

Hopefully they'll leave the old design as an optional display for a long time.  I looked through it all and read about the changes and I don't see much advantage to it except for larger pictures.  It breaks parts of the IMDb Movie Collection Manager Greasemonkey script as well as the TweakMDb addon, so I've set it back to the old design.  Once those are updated, I'll consider switching.

It is probably because of the redesign of IMDb.

I had the problem happen a couple times even before the redesign.

Just found a new downloading toy.  It was love at first sight.

I prefer JDownloader, as it supports more hosts, but I'm starting to use RDesc as a backup for when JDownloader's plugins go out of date, as RDesc seems to be updated pretty often.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9279/

Just tried it; I like that you can look at other things on the page while its loading.  There's also the TweakMDb addon, which adds Rotten Tomatoes ratings to IMDb pages (and its accurate since Rotten Tomatoes supports searching by IMDb ID) among other things, like enlarging actor photos on hovering, displaying all the movies different actors did together, showing actors' ages and the age they were when they made each film (which would be a good feature for PVD  8)), and displaying ratings on actor pages and in search results.

Support / Re: FilmUp image plugin: 'No Movies Found' discrepancy
« on: September 05, 2010, 01:48:54 pm »
There are problems with IMPawards as well, but I don't know if those can be blamed on the plugin. The site relies on Google for searching, and that may be where the problem lies. A search for "Solaris" finds Moon because Solaris mentioned on a Moon page. Solaris is second, third and fourth in the Google search results.

So the plugin needs to be updated to show the rest of the search results rather than just the first one (Also to auto-download the Extra Large version, when available, instead of making the user choose each time); as you say, the correct result is number 2 in the search results.  Unless I'm mistaken, the plugin only ever presents the first search result as an "option," regardless of how many there actually are.  And it could be aided with Google's allintitle: operator, as I describe below.  Until then, to clarify your workaround, your Web search can be used to find the correct page on IMP Awards, and once you do, you can copy the URL (http://www.impawards.com/2002/solaris.html) to PVD's URL field and run the plugin again, after which it will download posters from the correct movie.

You can improve the Web search's results by using the allintitle: operator just like you can on Google's own site:

Code: [Select]
http://www.impawards.com/googlesearch.html?cx=partner-pub-6811780361519631%3A48v46vdqqnk&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=allintitle:%s%u
If you like, you can also filter out some extraneous results by adding -"Extra Large" and -"IMP Awards Update":

Code: [Select]
http://www.impawards.com/googlesearch.html?cx=partner-pub-6811780361519631%3A48v46vdqqnk&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=allintitle:%s%20-%22Extra%20Large%22%20-%22IMP%20Awards%20Update%22%u
One disconcerting thing I found after running a search for Resident Evil: Afterlife +"Extra Large", is that Google has either not indexed the pages for all the extra large versions (even the months old ones) or there's a bug that prevents displaying them all.  (Surprisingly, running the Google Site Search directly on Google's site turns up 11 results instead of 10, but still not all 13.)  PVD must use a different method, though, because it has thumbnails for all 13.

Feature Suggestions / Re: Enable IMDb plugin to do Advanced Title Search

If nostra takes this up, maybe there should be an additional field, "Exact URL", for those cases where the search misses the expected result altogether. For example, if I do a search for Swiss Family Robinson, it skips over the 1960 Disney version, even though it is the first result when searching IMDB from the browser. It would be helpful if I could just paste in http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054357/

If I'm understanding you right, you can already do this.  Paste that URL into PVD's URL field, type/paste in whatever you want for Title, and PVD will import data for the correct movie.  It won't work if Title is left blank, though it would be nice if it could be.

Feature Suggestions / Re: Trailers

For older movies, Youtube often seemed the best source. It's frustrating searching through the crap, but using Greasemonkey scripts to identify and highlight the HD versions makes it a lot easier.

Which script?  Youtube enables you to filter using the 'Search options' under the main search box but not to change the defaults.  I appended "&search_duration=short&high_definition=1" to my Web Search Pro URL for Youtube to get
Code: [Select]
http://www.youtube.com/results?sourceid=captaincaveman&aq=f&search_query="{searchTerms}"+trailer&search_duration=short&high_definition=1
which works.

The crap to gems ratio does seem to be increasing, moreso for new movies, I'd imagine.  I just did a search for "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" trailer (looks like a crap movie, but a very distinctive title that shouldn't turn up many irrelevant results), filtered it by 'HD' and 'Short (~4 mins.)', and found there were still 534 results!  Clearly some users aren't checking to see if a video exists before uploading it themselves.  Then there's:
  • videos where the word trailer doesn't appear anywhere (even when +trailer is used)
  • reviews of the trailer
  • audio commentaries on the trailer
  • spoofs of the trailer
  • a "mashup" with the The Matrix trailer called "Scott Pilgrim vs. The Matrix"
  • video blogs where, in the course of describing their day, someone says "So I was watching the scott pilgrim vs. the world trailer..."
  • the trailer with foreign-language voiceovers
  • videos of a different topic that use the soundtrack from the trailer
  • videos that claim to be the "original" trailer.  (Accept no imitations!  Comes from a time long before Trailer#3 when people still took pride in their work.)
  • fan-made "trailers" that contain no actual footage from the movie
  • "Scott Pilgrim vs The World - NEW Official Trailer" (Others number the trailers but this guy trumps them because his is always NEW)
  • a "trailer" that's actually a "behind the scenes" video posted by someone whose description is in Russian and probably doesn't know the difference
  • trailers for the video game based on the movie
  • spam telling you where to download the full movie for free
  • the whole movie posted in 7 different parts
  • a video that claims to be a "Teaser Trailer," followed by a "Release Trailer"
  • "TV Spot #5" which is presumably a condensed version of the trailer (See all 5 to see all the ways the trailer was edited down!)
  • the trailer playing on a TV filmed through a shaky cell phone camera (yet HD!) in a noisy environment (No one informs them that a real HD version of the trailer has come out.).

Google has some good options for their Advanced Video Search like the -site:youtube.com feature you mentioned.  You can also limit the Duration to videos < 4 mins., the Quality to High, and the Language to English (or whatever language you're expecting, although occasionally a foreign-language dubbed trailer is all that's available).

But it looks like VideoSurf (in add-on form here, and add-able to Web Search Pro here) can do almost everything Google can do and some things it can't.  They have:
  • Visual Summaries: Thumbnail frames from the video.  Hover over them and they appear in the large main thumbnail.  Click 'Show Faces' and only faces are shown so that you can identify who's in the video.  Click them and with some videos you can start playing right from that point (If not, the times of the thumbnails are listed, so you can drag the slider to them).  This is particularly nice to help keep from getting Rick-Rolled or to spot videos that are actually songs (all the thumbnails will usually be identical).
  • Refine Results by Person: People known to the Videosurf database that are recognized in the videos appear in the upper left of the page in thumbnail form and you can click on them to narrow down the search results to videos containing them (like if you know that a certain actor is in a movie).

VideoSurf doesn't have a "High Quality" option like Google Videos, but a Google Videos search using High Quality turned up a trailer on Hulu that wasn't HD as the first result.  (Adding "HD" to the search terms didn't help at either site.)  Videosurf actually has a "Trailers" filter that narrowed down the search from 3442 results to 9.  Or a "Professional Sites" filter that took it down to 30.  Another very useful thing is it automatically groups duplicate videos into one search result, so you won't be clicking on the same irrelevant video more than once in the results (unless someone has made token changes like inserting an advertisement, but you've still got the thumbnails to go by).

Feature Suggestions / Re: Screenshot Maker - Frame Selection
« on: August 24, 2010, 06:44:16 am »
I don't want any virtualdub features...just a user interface that allows stepping through a video when searching through a video for frames to capture.  It's more convenient to use the built-in capture, but it has a clumsy interface that make it difficult to select the best quality frames.  Using an external program means that I have to add the images to PVD manually when I'm done capturing frames.

I add them manually anyway with a link to a folder to avoid PVD replacing the timecode or frame numbers I've saved in the filenames.

Perhaps forward stepping might not be that difficult but backward stepping appears to be a tall order when it comes to compressed videos, certainly fast backward stepping.

I've tried many programs for this purpose.  Virtualdubmod hasn't been updated in a long time, and the last time I used it I got a message that you might be better off using a newer program.  Virtualdub is good but doesn't support a lot of formats unless you first put them in a .avi container with Avisynth after scanning them with a program like DGMPGDec.  (If you're opening transport streams, I can see scans might be needed, but DVDs should be perfect files.)  And it doesn't save the frame number or timecode in the filename (but you can use a macro to capture it from the control in the bottom part of the window). AVIdemux is similar but can be set to auto-scan the file upon opening and supports more formats.  Scans aren't essential for all files, but if you don't scan, you'll sometimes get an error while scrubbing and have to reopen and scan, which is annoying when you're in the middle of something.  Likewise with VideoReDo, and it supports fewer formats.  TMPGEnc MPEG Editor may work, but its been discontinued.

MPEG Video Wizard is my favorite because it
  • doesn't require any scans
  • allows viewing in fullscreen mode
  • lets you toggle deinterlacing on and off with a hotkey so you can pick a frame that doesn't have interlacing from telecining
  • lets you turn DVD subtitles on and off so you can choose whether or not they get displayed in the screenshot
  • is very fast, displaying a lot of frames while scrubbing, especially when holding down the left or right arrow keys
  • lets you use CTRL+arrow keys to step by I-frames and SHIFT+arrow keys to step by P-frames
  • saves frames with timecode in the filename using the F4 key and bypasses the Save As... dialog box if you use F5

Sometimes it doesn't do well with non-MPEG formats, but its reliable for DVDs.

Video Thumbnails Maker is often touted as good, *if* you get the paid version, which I did, but it only supports stepping in 1-second intervals, so I've given up on it, but it does have more options than PVD's Screenshot Maker.

I try to use BSPlayer when watching movies because that's the only player I've found that supports backward stepping by storing the frames in RAM so that you can instantly go back and reevaluate whether a previous frame was better than the current one.  And you can set the screenshot filenames to use timecode and frame number using something like:

Code: [Select]
[bscap] %F %E [%T] [%FR]
Its just a bit of a pain getting it set up initially.  You have to uncheck 'Seek by keyframes' and choose the right 'Video Rendering Mode,' which varies depending on which graphics card you use.

Next I'm going to look into noise reduction for some of my grainy screenshots.  Neat Image and Neat Video have impressive-looking samples.

I took a quick look at some of the trailer sites and a couple look promising...fairly quick and the video links aren't hidden.

There is an issue with the large number of links for some movies...interviews, various codecs / sizes / operating systems, making selection difficult.  That means a selection dialog is necessary in any trailer script, which means that "silent mode" is not an option.  You wouldn't be able to select all the movies in your database and expect to have the trailers in your database some hours later.  You'd have to manually select each and every one.

I came across a program called Media Center Master, which auto-scans folders and auto-downloads info from IMDb, TMDb, and TVRage, and trailers from movies.yahoo.com, trailerspy.com, and movie-list.com, so those may be the most amenable to scripting.

If there were any that allowed searching by IMDb ID, a script might be able to run in silent mode, but none of those trailer sites do (nor does hd-trailers.net, another one I found).  However, you can search TMDb by IMDb ID (and the program does, once its decided on the IMDb ID), and it has trailer links, though I would imagine there might be some that were to sites other than Youtube.  IMDb itself has trailer links to trailers from an unmanageable variety of sources.  criticker.com is another site that has links to trailers and the IMDb links on every movie's page, but I can't find any way to search by those IDs, even with a Google Site Search.  Also, allowed sources for videos are Youtube, Google Videos, or Metacafe (though there are sites like keepvid.com that say they can create direct download links for all those).  listal.com is similar, and only allows Youtube videos, but some of the videos for a title are things like "Making of" or interviews.

Most interesting to me was that Media Center Master was doing Advanced Title Searches at IMDb.  Added as feature request here.

Feature Suggestions / Enable IMDb plugin to do Advanced Title Search
« on: August 23, 2010, 12:55:10 pm »
Maybe Advanced Title Search would be a good addition to PVD's IMDb plugin because, in addition to the title, you can search using the year of the movie, among other things.  For example, in searching for the movie Jump, I tried jump, jump 2009, and jump (2009), but an Advanced Title Search returned fewer results.  I would think this would make a significant reduction in the number of times you have to double-click one of the search results to import data, and fewer search results to look through when you did.  The year you typed into PVD based on your source of information might differ from the year that IMDb had on record, but this should be a rare occurrence and you could always cancel the search, delete the year, and try again.

If you were just adding a video manually, you might do as well to search using your web browser and paste the IMDb URL into PVD with a macro program, but a bigger benefit would be had in using the File Scanner and operating like the program Media Center Master, which tries to extract the year from the filename/foldername (and actually runs multiple searches at IMDb and uses the one that returns a result).  "TV Series" could also be added to the search, where appropriate, to narrow it down further (based on PVD's knowledge of the number of files).

BTW, in this case, using "Jump" for Title or Original Title in PVD didn't turn up the right movie in *any* of the search results, so I had to find the IMDb URL in my web browser.

Scripts and Templates / Black blocks in custom skin
« on: August 23, 2010, 03:58:42 am »
I've been getting black bars/blocks like this in my custom skin (modified from PVD Classic Tabs) for some time:

There's a lot of them like this when first starting PVD and they gradually diminish in number as I click different movies in the left pane.  On expandable fields, clicking the minus and then the plus will also remove them.

Things I've tried:
1. Comparing the skin code for rows where this happens and where it doesn't.  Country and Original Language, for example are identical, yet the blocks never occur in Country.
2. Checked default background color.  Its $f4f1e9, not black ($000000)
3. Resetting colors in pvdconf.ini as suggested here.
4. Changing to 'PVD Classic Tabs' skin.  This removes the black blocks from all but the Tagline field.  Restarting PVD with 'PVD Classic Tabs' active removes all of them. Changing to 'PVD Classic' also removes all of them.
5. Making the code for the Country row exactly the same as in the 'PVD Classic' skin.
6. Examined 'PVD Classic' and 'PVD Classic Tabs' skins to see if there was something that set the width for Tagline, but I didn't see anything.

I found a partial fix by adding width="120" to the Country column like so:
Code: [Select]
                         <row>
                            <column width="120" halign="right">
                              <fieldlabel field="country" />
                            </column>
                            <column>
                              <country />
                            </column>
                          </row>
Code: [Select]
                         <row>
                            <column width="120" halign="right">
                              <fieldlabel field="country" />
                            </column>
                            <column width="120">
                              <country />
                            </column>
                          </row>

but this didn't work for the Description box, no matter which of the columns I added width to nor what order the attributes were in.  This is another example that has a Description:

1. Installed the Form Saver Firefox add-on.

I like Lastpass for forms so far, for what little I've done with them.  I'll keep Form Saver in mind as a backup.
