Hi,

I've noticed a minor issue with importing from IMDb. When I'm in People view and import a person's filmography, I always use the "merge filmographies" option, so that the IMDb data is merged with any existing filmography I have for the person. Trouble is, there are many occasions where the IMDb import creates duplicate entries for movies I already have listed for the person. Now, I can understand this when the year of release listed on IMDb is different than what I had in my database, or the spelling is different, but that only accounts for some of the duplicates.

What seems to be happening is this: if IMDb happens to use different capitalization on a movie title than what I already had, then the import process creates a separate entry. For example, if IMDB has "Pirates of the Caribbean", while I already had "Pirates Of The Caribbean" (note the capitalization differences), then I wind up with two movies listed. In other words, the import process appears to be case-sensitive! (Note that if the capitalization matches, then no duplicate would be created.)

This frequently happens when I add a movie in Movie View with "New Movie Master", then go to People View and import from IMDb to "flesh out" the actor's filmography. If I happened to capitalize the title differently in "New Movie Master" than what IMDb uses, I'll get duplicate entries after the second step.

For what it's worth, I don't know if this is necessarily the fault of the IMDb plugin, or if it's an issue with the internal functioning of PVD.

Would it be possible to change the plugin and/or PVD so it either ignores upper/lowercase or automatically corrects it when merging filmographies?

There is some way to import the full cast from IMDB except the uncredited actors? Often import with the option "from the main page only" is not good because it can miss some important actors but importing the full cast is to much not important information.

Welcome to the forum, dicksonvm.

As you probably know, IMDb simply includes the 15 "first billed" cast on the main page, whether the number of "important" actors is 5 or 50. Downloading "from the main page only" is the only way to restrict what for some movies might be a very long credits list. It would be possible to identify and exclude "uncredited" actors, but I don't think that would give you the result you're expecting. "Uncredited" just means "not credited." Some movies will only credit "important" roles, but others include "unimportant" roles (man on park bench, all 50 dancers, etc). Some movies list important roles followed by unimportant in alphabetic order, but others do not (e.g., everyone might be listed in order of appearance).

As a practical matter, I've found it necessary to use the "from main page only" option just to prevent my database from being flooded with people I have no interest in. Yes, this means excluding some important actors. Those who have a significant career, however, will likely make it into the database anyway (because they made the main page cut in other movies). The filmographies of these people will still include all the movies they were in. As a note of interest (certainly not a practical solution to the problem)...if the movie in question is clicked in the filmography, the actor will be added to the movie (i.e., to position 16).

Thank you for the answer. The problem is that I'm using the excellent Personal Video Database in a little different way. When I see the People Window, I like to see at the filmography field only the movies I have in database (this means only the movies I have seen with that actor). So I configured the people information import plug-ins to not overwrite the filmography. This means that the only way to don't miss important actors is to get the full cast, with all its "garbage".

I agree that ignoring the uncredited actors would not be the perfect solution, but it would minimize the problem. For a better solution I have some suggestions for the import plug-in (just a brainstorming):
1. Create a field where the user can put keywords (like "uncredited", "man on the street", "Man on Bus", ...) that makes the plug-in ignores that actor.
2. Ask for the user how many actors should be imported each time, a cut number. So the user can open the IMDb page and see how many are really important. Some "unimportant" actors will be important together, but its ok...
3. Show to the user a list with the full cast, showing the actors name and his character with check boxes to choose which should be imported...

You can enter such information as Role.

I do not think it is a good idea to ask for the number every time, but I could add an option to the plugin where you would be able do define this number.

I think something like this is the only practical solution. Implemented as an option, it would be a nice embellishment. A dialog could present the entire cast list, with check boxes selected for the first 15 and unselected for the rest. It might even be possible to preselect the check boxes "intelligently" by testing for "rest of cast listed alphabetically" or the first repetition of a role name. The user could then quickly make the desired adjustments.

Can't import more than 9 imdb records at at time without a "http bad request" error. Is anyone else having this problem? Is it the website blocking batch requests or is something wrong with the plugin? Using version 0.9.9.10

I'm getting this error with the IMDb People plugin. If I stop it (not the easiest thing to do because the error dialog appears before I can Cancel), and restart it, it continues on for a while longer...

Exactly the same thing just happened with my AllMovie script, so I suppose this error is not related to the particular plugin or script being used.

Hi,

Really great software! I've been using PVD now for over half a year.
But, since yesterday there's a problem....
I too get the "HTTP/1.1 400" error, when importing from IMDB. I installed the plugin as you said, but it is not compatible with 0.9.8.20... Is there another way to import from IMDB with this version? I had a lot of troubles with the latest version, so I'd rather stick with 0.9.8.20.

Excuse me for the way a treat the beautiful english language.  ;)

Sorry, 0.9.8.20 is no longer supported. 0.9.9.x is now "released" (no longer a beta). I suggest you install 0.9.9.11, and then we can deal with whatever "troubles" you may have. I expect, however, you will have none—it's quite stable now.

The only problem left is that I seem to have lost all the information about language...

Can't you just Re-read video file? It is possible to import to that field, but doing so overwrites all the video stream data. Re-reading it will put it back, but may cause odd results if there is more than one stream.

The 2009-06-26 version of the IMDB movie information plugin writes "IMDbPro" in the director field and does not fetch any writer or producer-info (the respective boxes in preferences are checked) when importing movie info.

I'm unable to replicate the problem. Maybe it's intermittent—does it happen now? Does it happen for all movies? Maybe you're trying to access movies only available on IMDbPro. If not, please provide some examples.

Strange  I am using 0.9.9.11 and it happens with every movie I try.
fx. start with new empty database.
Enter (random choice) "The Savages" and import data from IMDB select the 2007 movie
and this is what I get: (http://1st attachment)
When I view it in the peoples section it looks like this: (http://2nd attachment)
But, since it seems to be non-general I will try to reinstall a clean pvd  and see how it acts.

Don't think I ever entered any login info. But a clean reinstall did the trick. To see if my IMDB login info might be the tricker, I reentered my login info, but the errors did not reemerge. Problem solved but not identified! Thanks anyway.

Not so fast... Now it's doing the same thing to me! :o

Here's my log. The redirection to the login page looks suspicious, but I suppose that's "normal." Adding or removing logon information from the configuration makes no difference. After restarting the program, it worked—but only once. Same thing when I reinstalled the program. This is not surprising, as I'm sure it was up-to-date anyway, and I didn't do a clean install.

In fiddling around with this, the problem seemed to go away, and then came back. I was about to conclude it must be an intermittent thing (having something to do with the website). But it bothered me that a clean install seemed to fix it. So I experimented with imdbconf.cfg—disabling it, restarting the program, re-enabling, etc. I soon found I was able to cause the problem to return. I haven't been able to pin down exactly what's going on, but it's consistent enough to conclude the problem has something to do with how the configuration settings are saved and recalled. I put it that way because I haven't been able to cause or fix the problem by changing the configuration within the program. The change only occurs after the program is restarted. I don't know if the specific setting changed makes any difference, but the one I've had the most "luck" with (i.e., causing something to happen) is Download tags from the first page only. Even then, it's not consistent, and I have yet to see any pattern in whether it's set to on or off. It's making a change, restarting the program, and running the plugin—twice—that seems to make the difference. Sometimes. :-\

After getting this far, I decided to see if I could get it in a stable state by not changing the configuration. No such luck. Regardless of which way that setting was set, and even if it was last changed to fix the problem, restarting the program causes the problem to return. It makes me wonder if this is happening to everyone, and is just to subtle to notice. Fortunately, it happened to in the "working" state when I ran the plugin overnight to update my entire database for the new votes and top 250 data. :)

(...and wrong thread, but the TVDb plugin has, in the last few days, stopped downloading episodes for me too! ... it seems the more sources you end up using, the more you need to make sure the plugins are fit and working!)

I am a new member here. First to say that PDV is an excellent piece of software, after which I uninstalled all others that I had used for catalogin my collection. But these days using 0.9.9.9. I've noticed the same problem: when adding new movies, no info about director or writer, and no actors and characters are downloaded. I tried with several movies, I installed 0.9.9.11, went back to previous version, but still problems (the same as in above posted screenshots). I did not reconfigure any plugins (although, I perhaps touched something accidentally). Advice me what to do, cause, obviously I am not the only one.

I had the aforementioned problem (getting "IMDBpro" entries) and just updated to the new IMDB plugin version.  That problem went away, but a new problem has appeared.  It does not appear to be loading Actor, Producer, or Composer entries at all anymore.  Only Director and Writer entries are loaded successfully, for some reason.  I'm using a recent clean install of PVD 0.9.9.11, and I've never entered any IMDB login info into the plugin configuration.

if you have not already, re-install 0.9.9.11. As of right now, the 0.9.9.11 installer still contains the old version of the IMDb plugin (the one with the bug). Download the fixed version (http://www.videodb.info/bin/plugins/imdb.zip). This contains IMDb.dll—copy this to your Plugins folder, overwriting the old version of the file.

Yes, there's an obvious problem with the people data—it doesn't seem to be restricted to, or consistent with the fields you mention. Perhaps be a consequence of the rapid fix (fix one thing, break another)? :-\

BTW, it's also—sometimes—setting the viewed flag of the updated movie.

Never mind. That seems to be a bug in the program. After any edit, the view flag is set.

It seems the problem is caused by a recent modification to my skin to show the date viewed in addition to the viewed flag. I did this by leaving the viewed field (flag + date) as is, and adding the date using viewdate (date only). I rather like this, as it allows released, added, modified and viewed dates to be shown together in sequence. The behaviour seems to be caused by the existence of viewdate in the skin. The viewed flag is set just by entering edit mode—regardless of whether anything is changed. It makes no difference if viewed is removed (which I can't do anyway, because I still need the flag). I need to fix this programmatically. Will do this in the next update.

Hi there Guys,

First off Great work on the Personal Video Database,
It is exactly the applet which I have been looking for for ages. that does everything I actually want without using 4 different items.
I have also been having the issue with the Director, Writer etc entries.
I downloaded the new IMDB.com Plugin (thanks for the Link Rick.ca)

Now I have a HUGE question, is there any easy way to clear all the Movie/Series, Writer/Director/Publisher entries all at once?
or at least the ones I select? Asking because I have 700+ movie entries that I have gotten in my collection over the Years. and things I have added to Wish basket.

Thanks a Ton for any assistance.

The Delete function applies to whatever items are selected in the list. If multiple items are selected, the delete key will not work (a safety measure, I assume), but you can still select Delete from the Movies menu or the toolbar.

Understand Delete just makes a record "invisible"—it doesn't delete the record from the database. This is to maintain the integrity of the database. For example, the movie you want to "delete" may exist in filmographies, so the record needs to be maintained for that purpose. If it's not needed for anything, it will purged when running Optimize database with "Delete movie orphans" selected. If you really want permanently delete a record, you may do so by pressing CTRL as Delete is selected—as explained in the warning message displayed whenever Delete is selected.
