Title: New computer... trying to restore database

Just got a new comp and i'm trying to restore my old data base.  I have read on here that you must use the version of PVD that was last used with that database.  Is there a way to find out what version i was using by the save .bak file?  If i find the proper version is restoring as easy as using the restore option under file and selecting the .bak file?

Normally you should be able to restore any 0.9.8+ version without problems using the 0.9.9.14

I have now installed 0.9.9.14

When i initially try to run the program to install it I get the error

6:I/O error for file "K:BACKUP\WEEKLY\MY DOCUMENTS\PERSONAL VIDEO DATABASE\MOVIES.PVD"
Error while trying to write to file
Access is denied.

Unsuccessful execution cause by a system error that precludes successful execution of subsequent statements
Error Code: 24

So this file is the back up on my external HD where i was pointing PVD version 0.9.8.ish before uninstalling.

This error allows me to continue to open PVD but not install it.

The error message refers to a .pvd file, not a .bak file as you were originally asking about. Which is it? Whichever, eliminate the external drive as the source of the problem by copying the file to a local drive. When you start PVD, you'll get error messages because the program is going to try to open the last used file. Dismiss any messages and proceed to opening a file...

If the file is a .pvd file, you should be able to Open it. If necessary, the program will update it to the current format. If you have a copy of the original .pvd file, use it—that's less complicated and error prone than...

If it's a .bak file, you won't be able to open it directly. A backup file is meant for restoring a current database. I believe the program has to have something loaded, or it won't be able to do a restore. So Create a new database, and then restore.

I suppose the problem might also be UAC. What version of Windows are you using?

I did what you said and moved the file to a local drive and it worked right away....  Thanks so much

One more problem.  I can't seem to install it properly.  Each time I have to reinstall it and it is not saved as a program on my comp.  Any tips?

Do you have administrator rights? How do you know it did not install properly?
