Title: [SOLVED] Import from IMDB Not Working
Post by: Chummy on August 19, 2010, 11:02:12 pm
Importing from IMDB is not working again.  Are there plans to update the plug-in and, if so, when may it be available?

Thank you.

Works great for me.

1. Check if you are using the most current version of the plugin
2. Post your plugin settings
3. Post Titles for which import does not work
3. Start PVD with -debug command line parameter and post the contents of Help -> Log window after reproducing the problem

1. Yes, I checked before posting, and I am using the most current version of the plugin.

2. Settings -- apart from 'Description' allowed to overwrite all other data. Custom field for votes: IMDB Votes .. Custom field for top 250 rank: Top 250: .. Custom field for Technical specs: Technical Specs: .. Custom field for User Review: User Review: .. Download full plot summary .. Download full credits .. "Followed by" only .. Download Awards .. Download "Episodes" .. Download box office data .. Download image .. Set as Default for movie info .. Merge filmography

3. Plugin does not work on any title. The status area at the bottom of PVD shows that data appears to be downloading but it is not entered into the movie data, regardless the film title.

I have set all the options exactly same as you did and it still works fine for me. Maybe you have some application installed that changes incoming traffic like ad filter or smth like this?

Nope, nothing new.  The IMDB plug-in used to work just fine.  Only recently does it show it's downloading data while not actually adding that data to the PVD database.

But it's not. According to the log you posted, it's doing nothing after the GET statement. As nostra suggests, it would seem that something is preventing any data from being downloaded. Have you checked your virus scanner, firewall, peer blocker, etc.?

If data were being downloaded, the log would look something like this...

Yes, I checked all potential blocks before I posted.

Again, this is only a recent phenomena.  Until recently PVD imported data just fine from IMDB.  I've changed nothing with my security settings, measures in that interim.

When I select Import from IMDB the status bar at the bottom of PVD indicates data is "downloading" from IMDB, as I mentioned above.  Also as noted above, despite saying the data is being downloaded it is not being imported into the PVD database.

I just tried to import from IMDB.  At the bottom of PVD in its status bar it's noted that data is being downloaded, as well as identifying the size of the data in KB, etc.  All that is actually imported to PVD, however, is the url of the movie title.

This is different from my earlier experience with PVD, and as I've written previously, it's a recent change.

What I should also note is that ONLY the IMDB plug-in is not working properly.  For example, I can import data from Allmovie.com just fine, but prefer that data from IMDB.com.

We're not trying to have an argument with you. The fact you're having a problem no one else is suggests it has something to do with your system or configuration.

You posted a log which indicates nothing is being downloaded. Now you're saying you see a clear indication that downloading is occurring in the status bar. Those things should be showing up in the log. Is it still showing nothing after the first GET statement?

What skin are you using? Have you tried refreshing after a download? Are all fields checked in Preferences - Movies - Visible items?

Here's a snippet of the log from an attempt to access the IMDB for the film HUD. Again, it matters not the title. None work any longer with this plug-in.

In comparing this to the code posted above the plug-in appears to be halting after making this initial contact and logging in, but before it proceeds with GETting the keywords, etc.

It may mean I'm the only PVD user who is reporting the problem.

> You posted a log which indicates nothing is being downloaded. Now you're saying you see a clear indication that downloading is occurring in the status bar. Those things should be showing up in the log. Is it still showing nothing after the first GET statement?

What I've said is that the log shows what it does, as noted above.  I've also said since the beginning that the status info at the bottom of PVD shows that some data is being downloaded, the info shows this also as x KB for example, but nothing is actually entering the PVD database.

Please see the above post for the log snippet re: what the log shows after the first GET statement.

> What skin are you using? Have you tried refreshing after a download? Are all fields checked in Preferences - Movies - Visible items?

Before posting I also tried using different skins, again anything to resolve the glitch before I reached out to others to report the problem.  I haven't changed the skin since I started using PVD, either, the PVD Alternate Zskin.

All fields are checked, yes, I believe as noted above in an earlier post of mine.  Yes, I've tried refreshing after a download, tried restarting PVD, still to no avail.

The plug-in stops its work here.  All that is added to the respective film title is the IMDB url for that film.  I don't believe security settings, firewall, etc. would allow a portion of a script to work and block the remainder, or actually work to halt the script from proceeding further.

Something else to consider --

Checking just now, I added some films on 7/19/10, and all was well.  The latest IMDB plug-in is dated 7/22/10.  I believe I updated to its latest version around the end of July.  All film titles in my collection prior to this update include IMDB data.

Since updating all that I can access from IMDB is, as I've written, the url of the respective film title.

I understood the first time. This is inconsistent with the log you posted. Without further information, it's impossible to determine whether this is because the log is not working, you didn't post the complete log, your observation is incorrect, or something else entirely is going on.

Please see the above post for the log snippet re: what the log shows after the first GET statement.

Both your latest logs show the plugin running a query to find the title. In both cases, the result is ambiguous, and no further action is taken. These, too, are inconsistent with your observation that data is being downloaded. Are you not seeing a dialog for choosing from a list of movies? Might such a dialog be hidden under another window? Do you have Silent Mode on?

Quote
The plug-in stops its work here.  All that is added to the respective film title is the IMDB url for that film.

What appears to be the result of a URL being added to a new record could actually be the result of an invisible record with the same title being made visible as a result of the add function. Such records, of course, would normally have at least one (and usually more) people associated with them. But there can be orphan records as well—that have nothing but a title and a URL. So to clarify...Are you getting a URL—and only a URL—for each and every movie you attempt to add?

No, I'm the only one who has mentioned Visible items settings. Are they all checked or not?

If none of this helps, start the program with the -portable switch (so a default configuration file will be used) and create an new database. Test that to see if the plugin works there. If it does, then there's probably something wrong with your configuration.

I also understand this may be inconsistent with the log, but that negates neither the observations I've reported nor the log data itself.  I posted the entire log.  More recently I focused on just the activity it tallied with respect to the IMDB plug-in, following your post so that apples may be compared with apples.

I wouldn't necessarily focus on the log being the problem.  It's merely the piano player, reporting what the plug-in is doing inside PVD.  I can write again what I am observing but it's not going to change.  That's why, after first trying several troubleshooting steps before posting, I posted on this forum, believing the latest version of the IMDB plug-in has a flaw.

The result is identical to the log snippet that you posted, with respect that is to capturing the movie title.  Login occurs, the movie is queried and the url is downloaded, added to the PVD database.  Unlike the activity reported in your log, the IMDB plug-in halts after capturing the movie title url and adding this to the PVD database.

Yes, I see the dialog for choosing from a list of movies when, that is, there is a list of movies.  There are certain movies that do not result in the opening of such a list.  But that's unrelated to this specific plug-in not working properly since the new version was added.

No, Silent Mode is not on.

With the latest IMDB plug-in I am only getting a URL and only a URL for any movie that I attempt to add. For any other similar plug-in I receive all information, for example, description, director, and so on.  I prefer the data from IMDB.

I started the program with the -portable switch and created a new database.  I then entered a movie title and tried to import data from IMDB.  Just as previously the status bar at the bottom of PVD indicated login, data download and data transfer rate, but the only data received and entered was the movie title url at IMDB.com.

I next tried to import from AllMovie.com using that plug-in. Again the status bar shows data download, data transfer rate and so on, but of course the process is a bit longer.  It was also successful.

As I first reported, it appears the latest version of the IMDB plug-in is not working.

I also understand this may be inconsistent with the log, but that negates neither the observations I've reported nor the log data itself.

This process would be a whole lot easier for both of us if you would refrain from making judgments about why a question is being asked, and just answer it. You've made it perfectly clear you believe there's a flaw in the plugin. So what? Whatever the source of the problem, it's not going to be fixed until there's a better understanding of what's happening and why. The answer to your original question is still the same. We don't see anything wrong with the plugin, we don't understand why you're having a problem with it, no one else has reported similar issues—so there are currently no plans to update the plugin.

BTW, please make proper use of the quote feature and preview your messages before posting. I fixed your last post.

I'd like to also add that the IMDB plug-in is no longer working for me. It was working fine in May this year. Then when I began to use the database again this month, it no longer imports data. I have to admit that I've only tried to import data for TV Episodes this month, not movies, but that used to work fine. JLM

What OS are you using? Are you using the latest versions of the program and the plugin? If so, try the "debug" version of the plugin posted here (http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php?topic=2070.msg10680#msg10680). Follow the instructions carefully, and post the data it collects back here.

Chiming in here -- haven't had time to do anything with PVD for over a month (maybe two or more, I forget), so I thought I'd test to see how the IMDb plugin worked for me. Starting up PVD for the first time in a while there were two things that came up in a window saying there were updates (scripting engine was one, I believe?), so I said yes and restarted PVD as per the next dialog box.

IMDb plugin worked fine for several movies (don't remember all the titles, but "Young @ Heart" was one), then I added some covers (using the IMPAwards, FilmUP and Amazon.com plugins), and some time after that -- perhaps immediately after that -- IMDb plugin stopped working (titles it could not grab info for include "The Wrestler")... it was only grabbing the URL, nothing else. Looked like the rest was downloading, but nothing was saved to the database.

Thinking I'd post my results here, I shut down PVD and restarted with the -debug function. However, now IMDb plugin was working again. Tried recreating my cover downloads, thinking maybe that had something to do with it, but IMDb plugin kept working. I was even able to grab full information for those titles which had not worked just minutes before.

Curious thing. Not sure if this helps anything, or just confuses the issue, but I thought I'd share my findings, nonetheless. Only thing I can think of that would be cause for intermittent import problems is an issue or restriction on IMDb.com's end of things, perhaps even a quota thing they've implemented? I'm just grasping at straws...

My IMDb plugin version is 0.9.3.8 and my PVD version is 0.9.9.21.

Not sure if the results of my debug session are useful, but I have attached that to this post as a text file. (Alas, I was not in debug mode when I momentarily was unable to DL from IMDb.)

What you describe does sound like an Internet problem. It's not uncommon for the IMDb to be too busy or have some other intermittent problem. They can prevent one or more items in a mass download to be skipped, but the download will continue (i.e., it truly is intermittent). Although I worry about the possibility, there's no evidence they're imposing any kind of controls to stop what we're doing.

I recommend using the -debug switch always. It doesn't hurt, and it means you'll always have a log if something strange happens.

I was actually thinking that maybe I'd start doing that, although at the same time I was trying to determine if the website queries ran slower when I was in debug mode. But I guess that basic logging procedures shouldn't affect the speed of anything within the application, eh?

Will post a debug log when it happens again. It seems to happen with movies that IMDB doesn't got much info on. (the more obscure movies, in my case atleast.) Although the wrestler seems to be a fairly big production.

I'm having the same problem too and am having to use TVdb for episodes. It does seem to work if you go back to it, after shutting down, sometimes. As I am converting my M collector across it is a pain as there are 1000's of movies and series. it used to work fine up until the last update.

I've witnessed it not working in the last hour, but it's fine now. While it wasn't working, I could find not evidence of anything wrong with the plugin. IMDb just wasn't responding with any data.

Because the restart takes 5 minutes and the site / internet problem cleared in that time?

I don't think so. A restart takes closer to 5 seconds. I thought that was the case the first time, because it was more like 5 minutes before I got around to restarting. The reason for that was I happened to be running two instances at the time. So the first thing I did was try the other instance—and it worked. This caused me to think it must have something to do with the configuration file, so I deleted that and restarted the instance that didn't work—and it worked. But then I got suspicious and tried it again with the old configuration file—and it worked. So I concluded it must be an intermittent thing, and I just happened to test it as it fixed itself. But two such coincidences in a 15 hour period doesn't seem likely. :-\

And BTW, it works now.

Hello,

I've just started using PVD from yesterday, and "out of the box" I am experiencing the same problems - nothing but the URL from IMDB being imported. Same MO as previous posters (after using debug mode), log shows the first GET then nothing, though there is download activity (about 100K) that goes on in the status.

Using the debug option helps somewhat but still fails on the IMDB import within 1-3 imports (4 was my maximum). A restart of PVD (debug mode) *always* successfully imports a manual request of IMDB import (non "New Movie Master") on first try, but then again 1-3 tries later it fails (manual or master import) - just the URL and another restart is required to continue.

Are logging into IMDB as a registered user?

Its a bit hardcore, you could try installing wireshark and see what's happening at TCP layer
Title: Re: Import from IMDB Not Working
Post by: Quartzer on September 19, 2010, 12:24:11 pm
I did actually try as a logged in or not IMDB user but there was no difference.

Also looked at ngrep output to see if there was something awry in the stream from IMDB but nothing stood out.

That I can import from IMDB after a restart of PVD (debug mode) *everytime* but then it fails after 1-3 further attempts seems to indicate a client side issue. To be clear, once an import fails, it continues to fail, but once PVD is restarted that same import succeeds. A further import from IMDB may succeed, sometime twice or occassionally thrice more, but once it fails it's a restart again :( Painful!

I'd also like to stress that I've only had this limited success using the debug mode. I've been unable to connect for IMDB import ever (since yesterday when I first installed it :) ) using the "out of the box" PVD.

Hi,
I started having the same problem just 15 min. ago. I downloaded IMDB data 2 hrs ago for a few films, and closed the application. Now when I try to download data for a new movie, all I get is the URL of the movie. The version is 0.9.9.14.
Thanks.

It is probably because of the redesign of IMDb. Here is an example link (http://labs.imdb.com/title/tt1375666/). These redesign changes are live for me, so the regular link shows me the same page.

It is probably because of the redesign of IMDb.

I had the problem happen a couple times even before the redesign.
Title: Re: Import from IMDB Not Working
Post by: rick.ca on September 19, 2010, 10:20:54 pm
I had the problem happen a couple times even before the redesign.

There are a number of different issues at play here.

First, the error "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable" will always (it seems) intermittently occur. I updated 819 movies last night. In the 90 minutes that took, there were 11 of these—causing the update of 11 records to fail. A 1.3% failure rate for a Silent mode operation is fine. But if the same error is encountered when not in Silent mode, the failure will look like any other. This is why I recommend always using the -debug switch—so the log is available to determine the cause of any failure.

Second, there is an IMDb site redesign going on. From the look of it, it will require a complete re-write of the plugin. But even worse, it appears to be the sort of thing that's going to be phased in—so it may be a moving target for months.  ::)

These redesign changes are live for me, so the regular link shows me the same page.

Please post a log. This sounds like some users (based on location?) are being redirected to the "lab" site. What happens if you change your IMDb user preferences as described here (http://www.imdb.com/help/search?domain=helpdesk_faq&index=1&file=redesignolddesign), and add your login to the plugin configuration?

The version is 0.9.9.14.

Please update to the current version.

That I can import from IMDB after a restart of PVD (debug mode) *everytime* but then it fails after 1-3 further attempts seems to indicate a client side issue.

Thanks for your thoughtful troubleshooting. I agree the fact that restarting temporarily fixes the problem has to be significant. Maybe IMBb is allowing a few page hits, and then redirecting to the "lab" site—but that's only a wild guess. I would think that if a redirection were being attempted, it would show in the log. But maybe the plugin is getting "stuck" because this is happening in an unexpected way.

On the other hand, the fact that I've seen the same behaviour as you and I'm not being redirected, suggests something else is going on. Following is a composite log of my latest experiment. Rather than just update a record, this time I cleared the record and then ran the plugin. I consistently got the same behaviour you've reported...

Clear record and run plugin...

It is really weir with IMDB right now: I get the new design for a movie at work and the old one at home for the same movie. This behavior can also be observed with a browser (but not so often).
I am pretty sure that the most of the problems posted in this topic are related to this strange phenomena.

Hope to figure out what is happening asap.

Don't know what you mean by that last sentence.  The 503 error is identifiable when not in silent mode because of the dialog box that pops up.  In silent mode, presumably it wouldn't pop up, though I've never tried it.  This new problem has no popup; it just starts to download and then quits with only the IMDb URL filled in.

This is why I recommend always using the -debug switch—so the log is available to determine the cause of any failure.

I finally figured out how to do this with the portable version of PVD.   If you're starting the program with PVD_Portable.exe, pvdconf.ini will be stored in the Data folder.  But PVD_Portable.exe launches viddb.exe in portable mode, and that's the program you have to apply the -debug switch to.  So you have to create a new shortcut to viddb.exe with the -debug and -portable switches.  But when you do, it creates a new pvdconf.ini file in viddb.exe's folder and you lose your settings.  So you have to replace that with the pvdconf.ini from the Data folder.  Next time the IMDb problem happens, I'll post a log.

Second, there is an IMDb site redesign going on.

Hopefully they'll leave the old design as an optional display for a long time.  I looked through it all and read about the changes and I don't see much advantage to it except for larger pictures.  It breaks parts of the IMDb Movie Collection Manager Greasemonkey script as well as the TweakMDb addon, so I've set it back to the old design.  Once those are updated, I'll consider switching.

True, but I'm referring to the information that's posted here. Reporting "It doesn't work for me, either." isn't much use when there's reason to believe there may be more than one issue at play. Even your more helpful "I had the problem happen a couple times even before the redesign." is suspect. I don't know if you know the difference between a 503 and "the problem," or if you know when the redesign activity may have started to have an effect. I don't. Right now, it seems it's affecting users in different ways, and they apparently started making the changes last month. So, regardless of what you mean or how certain you are of it, I still have to wonder about the significance of such comments. If everyone would provide the most concrete information available—like a log—then more likely someone will recognize a pattern in our collective observations.

I'm sure it's going to break virtually all scrapers and scripts. Scripts require active authors to be kept up to date, and there don't seem to many of them. So I think it more realistic to expect at least some will die. And TweakMDb is just a collection of Greasemonkey and Stylish scripts, so it's in even worse trouble.

Ok, I see your point.  Here's my log, and it looks the same as yours; I just also included the part from the loading of the program until the problem.  I tried running the plugin on one movie prior, but its data was already complete, which I assume is why nothing downloaded.  I Ctrl+deleted the only-the-URL-filled-in movie afterward, restarted PVD, and repeated the exact steps, but couldn't make it do it again.

And TweakMDb is just a collection of Greasemonkey and Stylish scripts, so it's in even worse trouble.

I hadn't noticed that every single one of them is, but now that I know, maybe I'll just install the ones I like as scripts and uncheck them in TweakMDb (which I already did for IMDb Movie Collection Manager), as there can sometimes be a significant delay for new versions of addons to make it through the approval process, although its safer to wait.

While it seemed convenient at first, I stopped using TweakMDb once I realized I couldn't tell what version of the underlying scripts it was using. Maybe the scripts are installed normally and just managed by the plugin—so they can be updated independently, but I could be bothered trying to figure out how it worked.

I can't reproduce it because PVD works 99% of the time.

I can't reproduce it because PVD works 99% of the time.

Run the program with the -debug switch—so that when it does happen, it will be captured in the log.

Changing your login to see if it fixes a 1% error is probably pointless. It might be worth trying if the error rate increases to something that would make the affect (if any) noticeable.

...but I tried this again 20 minutes later and could not reproduce the behaviour. So my experience is the problem is intermittent, but when it happens it's consistent.  :-\

Ah... an *interesting* problem :)

I'm still experiencing the same behaviour (after the latest update today) - works until fails, restart then works, repeat. So consistent from my perspective!

Is there some way to get previous versions of the IMDB import plugin to try out (as some posters here have mentioned that previously it just worked)? A diff on the source code between these versions (if that were the case) could be interesting.

As you've mentioned, the changed/changing feed from IMDB may be the culprit, but it doesn't gel with a restart of PVD always making the import work first time.

In any case, I'm now a 4 day old newbie user of PVD and am finding it is the functionality I was looking for. Kudos to all involved in making this available.

That's generally not going to be effective. A previous version "that just worked" was most likely updated because it stopped doing so. I'm sure nostra does consider whether changes he recently made might have caused a current issue. This is not an open development project, so I doubt he'll ever be posting his source code. ;)

A new issue with IMDb import: Original Language field is filled in with the Production Company, or "Studio" as its called in PVD, instead.  The Studio field is correct, so both fields get filled in with the same thing.  Examples:

"Leaving Me, Loving You" http://imdb.com/title/tt0386590/, "China Film"
"D.I.E." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1517119/, "Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB)"

Removing my login data for IMDb under Preferences and restarting didn't help.

Looking through all the languages in the multi-select list, there were only a few Studios, and the earliest of them was added on 9/20/2010 7:55:06 PM PST, so the problem started before then.

I wonder if IMDB is returning a partial page....you know, when you go to a website and the page doesn't display properly so you do a "refresh"?  1% sounds a bit frequent for this, but if you're hammering IMDB with multiple updates, it may be more likely (503's come up for me about 7% of the time if I do enough connections to IMDB...but almost never on a single update).

When the next failure occurs, check the "page.html" file in the PVD installation folder.  It should contain the full move or person page requested...including </html> at the end.  If it doesn't then the problem is with the server (or PVD not checking for a complete page...your choice).  If it is complete, then maybe the download isn't completed before the plug-in starts processing it.

I doubt that PVD keeps the TCP connection open after a failure, but that would explain why a restart is necessary to clear it.  It may well be that since there is no error associated with a partial page, that extra code (ie. checking for </html> or a file byte count) might be required to verify completion of the page.  Recovery code (ie. reloading the page) shouldn't be too difficult if a partial page load is detected.

I will, but I checked page.html now after a successful import for comparison purposes and its just a bunch of symbols like

Looks like an image file. If you still have it, try changing the extension to JPG and then viewing.

Yep, it is an image file: the poster downloaded from IMDb for the last movie I imported data from.  Don't know why that would be.  I created a new record for another movie to see if it would happen again, and page.html became the poster for that one too.

This appears to be the case.  I've finally started adding some new movies and the errors are quite common...every 3 or 4 additions.  When the new page format comes up, only the main movie page is parsed, but when the old page format comes up, everything works.

Deleting the movie and re-adding is like spinning a roulette wheel.  Sometimes you get the same thing, sometimes not...restarting PVD is just another way of spinning the wheel, as best I can tell.

The urls in the log file are exactly the same, but return different page formats.  This may be caused by incomplete DNS propagation.  I've seen the same thing happen when moving a website to a new server...the old site remains active for up to 48 hours, and you can get the old or new site depending on whether the DNS propagation has reached the resolving server or not.  With a large server farm, I have no idea what the time frame might be.

Here's the log from my testing:

What to do?  What to do?

http://www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?redesignolddesign

So, I created an account with IMDB, set the "show old design" checkbox, added login info to PVD, added a movie and still got the new page.  >:(

The only "fix" I can see is if the plug-in checks which page format is being returned and parses accordingly.  This means having 2 parsing routines.  It sounds painful, but from the forums, it looks like "reference view" (the old page format) will remain, so it will always be an issue for anyone with an account that uses it.

Don't do much programming, huh?  I typically take the time I think it "should" take and multiple by 3.  Timelines work much better for new features than fixing problems (the "target" has a tendency to "move").

Thanks! I'm wondering what we might expect as the IMDb redesign rolls out. Does your fix involve parsing the new main page, or finding the old one? And will further changes be required as they convert other pages?

The new IMDB movie plug-in isn't importing the entire cast list.

Example:

La Pulqueria
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258058/

The plug-in may be using Nostra's unusual (hey, I don't have 'em) powers to remove people who don't matter.   ;D

Don't make me take away his Troubleshooter Award! ::)

I get the full cast list for that movie. Furthermore, all the actors are on the main page, so the "from main page only" option makes no difference. Are you getting a different page? That must be it...I see the redesigned main page is showing only the first 15. Are you getting only 15 actors even though that option isn't set?

I get 2 cast members.

Delaying an award is not the same as taking away.  Who was the Canadian boarder that had the gold medal taken away...Scott R....something...bet he feels like S**t.

When I check the movie link, I get the movie page with the 15 members in the cast list (new format)...and PAGE.HTML is not being created.

I also get only 2 cast members imported into PVD for that movie with the new version.  For this one

Godfathers of Hong Kong
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103085

I get 11 out of 16.

And for this one, PVD freezes (maxes out a CPU core) and I have to force close it when it gets to the cast list:

Delaying an award is not the same as taking away.

I already gave it him—for solving Actors' roles aren't being imported (http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php?topic=2070.msg10974#msg10974). I suppose we shouldn't penalize him for claiming he solved this one too. (I sound like my hero, Dick Pound (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Pound), explaining "Well, he wasn't doping for that race.")

I'm not getting the same results as you guys, however. A few times, after repeated trials, including restarting, I got the URL-only thing. But when it works, I'm getting the full cast. I see no evidence it's being sent to the redesigned main pages, so that may be the difference.

Do you have "Download full credits" checked in the plugin's options?  (and 'from main page only' unchecked)  I found the missing-credits problem occurs when its checked and doesn't when its unchecked.

I test it with the option set and not set and compare the results of both to the main and details page to verify I'm getting what I'm supposed to get. What are you doing? ;)

I don't remember now, but when I was checking my own results, I wondered if you were getting the main page credits from the redesigned site.

I don't remember now, but when I was checking my own results, I wondered if you were getting the main page credits from the redesigned site.

I set my IMDb preferences on the site to show the redesigned pages, but the same number of credits are displayed on the main page there as on the main page of the old design for http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103085.  There was a difference for http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258058 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258058)--15 on the main page with the new design and a larger number on the old design's page--so the new design cuts the main page's list shorter than the old design.  But since PVD only imports 2 (not 15) cast members for that movie, it doesn't seem like PVD is importing credits from the new design's main page, unless its parsing it incorrectly.  But the fact that unchecking "Download full credits" causes the full credit list to be imported indicates that PVD is parsing the page correctly.

The plugin tries to detect which design is used and applies the right parser. I can imagine that there still could be some problems as I have tested the plugin on a limited set of movies and it can be that not all possible situations are handled correctly. Movies you have problems with seem to be pretty rare and lack some information which could cause in different HTML code.

I will most certainly be able to provide a fix very soon.

From their description of the roll-out process, it sounds like this could go on for months. If the plugin is intelligently figuring out which page version it's being sent too and parsing accordingly, maybe that's not a problem. Otherwise, this will get even worse as they start changing all the subsidiary pages (i.e., keywords, fullcredits, awards, business, technical)—and using both versions of those at the same time. :-\

Well, we just need to be patient and wait until they have finished.

Assuming, then, we'll be seeing a series of issues that will require changes to the plugin, is there any specific information users can report about those issues that will help you? We could start a new topic that explains the situation, and asks users to report their observations in the most helpful way. Do you need logs, examples, page.html files, etc.? Or would a report that awards data is not being downloaded (for example) imply clearly enough those pages are beginning to be affected?

I wonder if there's another forum we can monitor to give us a head's up on what's happening.

Looks like another one here: using the new 0.3.0.0 People plugin, I just updated Jeffrey Lau http://imdb.com/name/nm0311508, who I already had some movies of in my database, and PVD created new entries for them instead of merging like it used to.  None of these new entries have years, either.  (See attached screenshot.)

In addition to not merging the credits, PVD didn't import all of them to begin with.  I tested on a copy of the database where I cleared the Jeffrey Lau record and reimported and the first entry under each category is missing.

Writer:
1.  Chut sui fu yung (2010) is missing.
Director:
1.  Chut sui fu yung (2010) is missing.
Producer:
1.  Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is missing.
Actor:
1.  Yuet gwong bo hup (2010) is missing.

And for the ones that did import, the years were missing.

I haven't made any changes to the plugin's settings recently; "Merge Filmography" is checked and "Filmography" has a black (not gray) checkmark.

I haven't made any changes to the plugin's settings recently; "Merge Filmography" is checked and "Filmography" has a black (not gray) checkmark.

Notwithstanding this should work properly, why do you have "Merge Filmography" checked? What happens if it's not checked?

...why do you have "Merge Filmography" checked?...

Because I didn't read your post in this (http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php?topic=1824.0) thread.   :)  I'll leave it unchecked.

Thanks, that works for the credits, but now an import for the same person (Jeffrey Lau http://imdb.com/name/nm0311508), fails to get the Alternative Names and Genres.

Also, for Jeeja Yanin http://imdb.com/name/nm2925876, I tried importing (with "Merge Filmography" unchecked) and PVD removed the 2 movies I already had in my database (presumably because I had Filmography as a black rather than gray checkbox, which I've changed now as well) and didn't add them back upon importing a second time.

With the new design, Alternative names are on the main page for me (see attached screenshot) and genres are on this page:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0311508/filmogenre

Also, are you able to import the 2 credits for Jeeja Yanin http://imdb.com/name/nm2925876 (http://imdb.com/name/nm2925876)?  I get nothing when I try to import them.

A few minor issues with the movie info plugin are illustrated in the attached screen shot...

OK, got them

I think genres are not important enough for people to download an extra page.

With the latest version, it does it to all actors in all series, while the data appears okay at IMDb.

# Votes has been without a thousands separator since it was introduced.

It has nothing to do with the plugin. I need to improve the field behavior in the main app.

I've seen the missing space in the actor data before and assumed the problem was at the source. With the latest version, it does it to all actors in all series, while the data appears okay at IMDb.

Now the information in parentheses is gone completely. :'(

In edit mode, I see there's a now a space between the role and comma-separator, so it seems the parenthetical part has simply been omitted.

Perhaps, but the information is essential. It is, after all, a summary of episode data, and not all actors have been with the series for the same period. Attached is an illustration from my series record for NYPD Blue (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106079/) (1993-2005). The information is particularly useful when looking back at an older series.

The screen shot illustrates another use. The last two entries are there as a result of PVD's unfortunate behaviour of adding people to movie records when they are updated in People View, even if the people there are restricted to "main page only." Such entries appearing tell me it's time to update the record to fix that problem. I would prefer, of course, if that weren't necessary in the first place. People should not be added to movie credits when the "Show people added from movie credits" option has been selected.

I'd be happy if you abbreviated the information. For example...

Hugh Laurie ... Dr. Gregory House (135x|2004-) instead of
Hugh Laurie ... Dr. Gregory House (135 episodes - 2004-2010)

...but some might think that even uglier. :-\

Thanks. That fixed the episodes issue. Unfortunately, it also caused and revealed more issues. :-X

1. Names with accented characters are not being handled correctly. See the attached list. These are people added by updating movie records with the plugin. In most cases, the person already exists in their proper name, so these are duplicates (and both appear in the credits of the movie updated).

2. The new option to Download episode data for roles is simply including any parenthetical data with the role, while not selecting the option excludes it. This works fine for credits in series, but it also affects movies. The second and third attachments illustrate the effect on 2001: A Space Odyssey (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/), with the parenthetical data and without. This is a good news/bad news story. The bad news is important information like "(voice)" is omitted. In this case, I might guess Douglas Rain played the voice of HAL 9000, not the computer itself. But with it omitted from the role of "Mission controller," I might not realize that was a voice role. The good news is it gets rid of those stupid "(as [actor's alternate name])" comments. For me, the good outweighs the bad, but this is adds yet another reason why the ability to handle multiple plugin configurations is required (i.e., IMDb-movies and IMDb-series). (No, this is not a request, but would be nice to have in version 1.)

3. If this new option is applied to movies (i.e., to retain "(voice)" and other useful parenthetical comments), it inserts a large space (34 spaces for the ones I checked) between the role and the comment—as illustrated in the second shot.

I'm having a problem, too, I think with the plugin, with adding credits in People View (using 0.3.0.2).  To use Jeeja Yanin http://imdb.com/name/nm2925876 as an example again, if I delete one of the two credits and then import with the plugin, it doesn't get added back.

1.  Happens with Merge Filmography both checked and unchecked.  (The Filmography box is a gray check.)
2.  If I delete both credits, then they're both added back due to the 'fill if empty' behavior, as you'd expect.
3.  The second credit does get added back if the Filmography box is a black check and Merge Filmography is unchecked, also as you'd expect.
4.  The surprising case is that if Filmography is a black check and Merge Filmography is checked, then the plugin behaves correctly--adding any missing movies from IMDb and leaving movies not on IMDb alone.  I tested this by adding a credit "Test" to the list and, upon importing, the missing movie was added back and "Test" was not overwritten.  From what I've read, it shouldn't be necessary to configure the plugin this way to get it working, as Merge Filmography can have undesirable behaviors.

It is actually like this: one of the titles and year should match. It causes problems if year differs or both titles do not match. Not setting "Merge filmography" prevents the program from adding 2 records for the same movie/person from different sources with different (wrong) year/title/original title, so it really helps if you do not check this option.

5. The Merge filmography option causes credits to be added to movies when the People records (and their filmographies) are updated. You don't want to do this if using the "actors from main page only" option to restrict the number of actor credits to 15 (recommended to prevent a huge number of minor actors from being added to the database).

I don't understand. From what you're describing, it seems everything is working exactly per design. If there is a problem, is it not that "Merge Filmography can have undesirable behaviors"? ASAIK, those behaviours have more to do with the inherent difficulty in combining credits data from different sources, which is the only purpose I can think of for the option. If IMDb is the only source, it makes more sense just to update filmographies so they are complete. That's the result you get if the option is not selected—the filmography is simply replaced with the current version.

Is it more involved than compiling a separate imdb2.dll that uses imdbconf2.cfg, and is otherwise identical to imdb.dll? That's all I need to maintain different configurations for movies and series. That's what I do now, but it only works for overwrite settings (because those are saved in pvdconf.ini?). The settings saved in imdbconf.cfg are, of course, shared by the two DLL's.

Oh, I thought about an abstract solution for all scripts and plugins.

Of course, you can have a second version of the plugin, but the bad thing is that I will need to compile it twice on each update :(
