I have been using PVD for quite a while now. My pvd file which includes the database was around 500mb when I migrated from another software. It then grew and grew and never stop.
Now, it is at a whopping 4.9gb!!! I am very concern with how big this file can grow before things started to happen like slow down the managing the db or crash the system and so on. I would opt for separating out the pictures into different folder which shrink my pvd file to around 100mb but this have it's own pros and cons.
What's your PVD file size?

Mine is 1.1G
I kept it that way by never downloading people's information and by only adding one picture per movie (7000 movies)

In "Preferences" - "Miscellaneous" you can choose NOT to save the images in database file.
In "Preferences" - "Folders" you can specify where your images should be stored
This should decrease youre file size.
An there is "Tools" - "Optimize database ..." try it!

LOL...same question asked 3 years ago. Anyway, that thread does not have poll. I think it would be easier to visualize with poll. Not sure if moderator want to combine the threads.
Anyway, I know about seperating the photos from the DB. I have been doing that for the past 1 year. However, due to changes in my system recently. More notably migration to PVD portable, I had to combine the photos back into the DB. As I type now, migration to PVD is successful and I am now splitting back the photos out of the DB. The photos are stored in network drive. Hope this work without problems. I would have liked it even more if the .pvd file works also from network drive.

I just spend the last few days using copy/paste to separate out the images into separate folder. Now my DB is only over 80mb only. However I have a different set of problem. The image folder size is now 4.33gb. Problem is the size on disk is 8.63gb. This is because there are a lot of files in it due to screenshots. I am sorry but I am not feeling nice wasting over 4gb of space. File system is exFAT. Not sure what to make of it now.

May I ask how many movies you manage with PVD?
My DB is 56MB (!!) and I manage about 550 movies. That's 114 (8-hour) days to watch movies. Every year I add the best 15-20 movies and that's it. But how can you get t 10GB DB files? Do you store huge amounts of screenshots?
Just curious if I really understand how PVD works and if I can use more of it's potential.

It is simply.
In my case, my experience with the size of the database somehow two years back is the following:
Database: 360mb
Movie:
visible: 575 movies
for each movie according to 1 - 5 (large or small) of the poster image,
one front and disc cover image (300 - 350 movies),
1 - 6 large or 1 - 10 small screenshots image (400 - 450 movies)
and much other information.
invisible: about 55000 movies
People:
visible: 2400 people
invisible: about 23500 people
about 1200 people with 1 - 3 photo
When I removed all fronts, disc cover and screenshots image for each movie, however, there's only one poster image. I also removed all the invisible films, all visible people who have now become invisible people and some unnecessary information, the database sized between 50 and 120 mb.
Now I have several database specifically:
People:
visible: 2400 people
database: 110 - 120mb with 1 - 3 photo
Movie:
visible: 575 movies with one poster
4 - 6 database: 50 - 60mb (removed are still some different and unnecessary information)
Movie:
Basic database
visible: 575 movies with no posters
4 - 6 database: 8 - 10mb
[removed as well as movie posters, all the people information and some other information, others are only necessary information about the movie (attached images)]
Summary:
Over the data and the greater the number of different images in the database, the greater the size of database.

I have 3177 movies. That is collection of over 10 years. I migrated from other movie database software before settling on videodb. Only 40% of the movies have screenshots. I store 30 screenshots per movie. Added with 1 cover for each movies, that's a lot of files.

Don't worry about size as long as you have a fast harddrive. over 9000 movies/clips, 71GB database size. Works totally fine.

It is more difficult, perhaps the closest way to optimize the database (invisible only), but beware, before the do make a new folder and copy the backup file to a new folder, that you have a copy for backup if you might need to recover the database to its original state in the event that something goes wrong and they would then perhaps lost some relevant information (see image).
This is especially the case if it does not remove all the unseen movies and additionally use the function: delete movie orphans or duplicates.
If this does not work, the next longer and more time-consuming option, namely to manually remove data in the Links box (depending on the skin).
Finally, manually removing residue movies namely one by one in the filter: invisible.
It is best in settings unmark connection box, thereby to prevent the transfer and will not be invisible movies.

My own database is 1.60 GB, with 3325 movies and 5601 people. That's with one poster for almost all movies, one to four screenshots (average two) for most, and one photo (rarely, two) per person.
Sad thing is, I'm nowhere near complete in cataloging my inventory. As it is, the ones I've cataloged have a total duration of well over 300 days.
I really gotta stop collecting...
