Feature Suggestions / Profiles, light version and others suggestions
« on: December 31, 2011, 04:01:19 pm »
Hi,

Some more thoughts about this great software.

Is there a way to add “profiles” to the software? When members of a family are using it, one movie could be marked “seen” for one user and “unseen” for others. Only a few things have to be changed (“seen-unseen”, “Rating”…) That could be stored in separated textfiles.

The mass editor is great but lacks a “replace function” to allow for example to replace “himself” in actors field by “lui-même” (French traduction), or delete double spaces or empty lines in descriptions and so on..

While the screens are getting wider it’s always a waste of space when adding a ribbon style interface. Lots of good ideas there anyway, may be a turn-around could be to use movable sets of tools which could be placed anywhere on the interface or even on the side or on a second screen when available.

Or may be add a light version of the software with only filters and a “play” button? It’s not always a good idea to have the whole interface when you have children messing around. And it could be helpful when you want to "distribute" your collection to friends too.

Good luck and happy new year.

Feature Suggestions / Import-export of single files
« on: December 29, 2011, 09:37:32 pm »
Your software is great.
Thank you many times and sorry if somebody already asked for what I'm about to suggest, I did'nt find such a request in the forum.

Why not turn it into a standard by adding  export-import files of single movies?

For example with a “.nos” (for “nostra” :D) extension.  A Double click on such a file and hop! The movie is in our database. These file could became a standard, being imbedded in mkv files, joined with whatever movie shared in the internet or having websites dedicated to them usw.
I’m certain you can see the potential.

There is always something wrong or missing with all internet databases.
When you have created a poster (if the film was only issued in DVD) or a cover if the movie is not yet disponible in DVD, when you have  the main actors displayed in the right order (not always the case with imdb) with accurate photos and date of birth, at least 6 screenshots with the right resolution and images that make sense, and whatever mention translated  in the right language (in my case French), I doubt not some other users would be grateful not having to go through the same trouble.

By the way, import from allociné (which has a dedicaded API that should make things easier) would be a great addition for French users. Regarding this API, I join files I could get a while ago that might help. (I could make it work to retreive data with excel and VBA). The first one was originally a .php I renamed in txt due to the format limitations regarding files types attachment).

Best regards

Feature Suggestions / managing backup copies of video files
« on: September 20, 2011, 11:31:30 pm »
Hello everybody, I'm new and quite interested by this astonishing software.

I don't know if what I'm about to explain will make sense because my english is quite poor.

I have a huge (and i mean HUGE) mkv collection.

If one of my hard-disks crasches (it happened once) I could lose up to 1500 films, so I have to manage backups on others disks that are not always the same size.

It would be nice to be able to check if each file has a backup copy, and when adding or deleting a file to be asked if a backup file should be added or deleted too. Or when replacing an avi file with an mkv one (for example), being able to keep the info and to swap only the files and the backups. Of course the software has each time to check if there is enough room on the disk, to store for each movie the path of the backup folder ...

For the moment I use a self-made "program" using excel vba which retrieves data from the french database Allociné (which provides a very convenient API) and I have implemented those functions. But the whole is very slow and on the contrary PVD is quite impressive with features I couldn't dream to achieve by myself.

So thanks in advance for considering this suggestion for a future version.

PS : If interested I can provide some info on the allociné API which, if integrated would certainly make this program useful for lots of french users.
