Support / [SOLVED] How to export a custom field?
« on: October 09, 2010, 08:53:37 pm »
I don't understand the manual on this subject. If I have a custom field named "Price", how do I export it in a CVS file? What's the syntax? I tried {%value=price custom=true}, but that doesn't work...

Support / Re: PVD 0.9.9.14 switches day/month of "date added"
« on: September 17, 2009, 01:12:44 pm »
I noticed that this strange behaviour only occurs when I modify a date which also includes a time. If I remove the time from the date, I can succesfully modify the date. I guess that's why I noticed this only on movies I added since version .14, because the imported movies from .11 have no time after the date.

Support / PVD 0.9.9.14 switches day/month of "date added"
« on: September 16, 2009, 04:06:13 pm »
I did a fresh installation of 0.9.9.14, and copied my collection from 0.9.9.11 over. I noticed that when I modify the "date added" on a newly added movie, no matter what I do, it places the month before the day (m-d-yyyy). When I modify movies from my .11 backup, it works properly on those. Anything I can do about this?

Awesome! I tried it out and it seems to work great. Thanks :)

I did notice it has trouble with this: Laboratory: DeLuxe, USA (as deluxe®) - that ® at the end turns up as ® in PVD. Is that the HTML character? No biggie though :) (if you want to test this, the movie this comes from is "Midnight Meat Train".

Have you tried editing the title (not original title) to reflect the box it comes from. If you prefix the title by the box description, box content will appear together when sorted by title (you just loose the collapsing list). It is how I solve the problem in my database.

In my case they need ID's because that's how my collection is ordered: I entered every movie based on the date of purchase, so old movies have a low number, new movies a high one. Since I can't sort the collection by purchase date (this is a custom field), I rely on the ID's. Hence your solution doesn't work for me.
Have you tried the date added sorted display.

Both of these suggestions are problematic for me. I prefer to sort my titles by ID (which in my case corresponds the purchase date), so ordering by titles is not ideal, even if it would solve my box problem.

Plus, having imported my collection from another program, the 'date added' is the same for all titles. Maybe I can re-import the collection and port my 'purchase date' over to the 'date added' field?

Hmm, it seems I have misunderstood the purpose of Personal Video Database. My intent is to use it as a DVD (and Blu-ray) database, but if it's not really meant to accomodate such intentions maybe I should be looking for something that will suit my needs better. Although it is call VIDEO database, not movie database, so that's confusing.

Anyway, my idea of a box set feature looks the same and works the same as episodes work: you enter a new movie which is the DVD box set (so it's not a new movie you enter, but a DVD), and then you add the movies that the box contains in the same way as you would add episodes. The difference being that the box is just a group name, and the movies behave just like regular movies (in searches and such).

I hope I'm explaining well enough, because English is not my first language.

I don't understand. How do ID's impact on the handling of box sets? Why do they even need ID's?

In my case they need ID's because that's how my collection is ordered: I entered every movie based on the date of purchase, so old movies have a low number, new movies a high one. Since I can't sort the collection by purchase date (this is a custom field), I rely on the ID's. Hence your solution doesn't work for me.

I should also mention that the way you suggested handling boxes in that topic won't work for me, as I've imported a large collection from another program so adding the box movies seperately will mess up my ID's (my ID's are numbered after purchase date, so the box could have a low ID and the box items would be high ID's - no good).

Yes I saw that topic. But I was wondering if the program could be adjusted to handle the episodes in another way, treat them more like seperate movies (at least as far as the credits are concerned). Of course, the real solution would be a new feature that lets you properly catalogue box sets. I'm sure that will probably be added in the future, but in the meantime, maybe a tiny modification of the episode feature could be a temporary solution?

It seems to me the best way to enter a boxset in PVD is to add the box, then include the movies as 'episodes'. This works well, but when you click for example on an actor's name, the results wont include other movies. Maybe for a future PVD version this behavior could be altered to regard episodes as movies when listing credits, doing searches, etc?

Support / DVD becomse unusable after PVD reads it
« on: August 07, 2009, 03:03:05 pm »
After I let PVD 0.9.9.11 read my DVD data, the DVD can't be played anymore by either PVD or any DVD player software, and Windows 7 shows the filesize of all the files on the DVD as 0 kb. I also noticed that after I put in another DVD, Windows still thinks the old one is in the drive (it ignores changing the disc). I'm using a USB Blu-ray drive, and to solve the issue I have to replug the drive. I'm using a 64-bit build of Windows 7. Not sure if this is related to PVD, USB or Win7, but I figured I'd post it nonetheless.

« on: August 03, 2009, 10:38:38 am »
Coming from Movie Collector, one of its best features was being able to switch from a column that lists titles like PVD does, to a column that displays all the covers or posters. This makes browsing your collection more fun, and it also makes it easier to spot a DVD you're looking for (if you bought it not too long ago, otherwise you would better just search for the title).

Feature Suggestions / import Technical Specs from IMDb
« on: August 03, 2009, 09:58:58 am »
I think it would be a usefull addition if PVD could import the technical specs of a movie as listed on the IMDb (example). I often check this information to make sure the aspect ratio of my DVD is correct (i.e. the same as listed on the IMDb). I hate finding out the DVD I just bought has the wrong aspect ratio!

Plus I find it interestion to know what sort of camera was used, if a movie was shot on film or digital, that sort of information.

I believe that adds the folder to the appropriate folder locations in Preferences - Folders. Those won't be relevant if you switch to Save images in database after the import is complete. BTW, have you done that? I recommend it, but only after you're sure all your images have been imported. Once the switch is made, it cannot be reversed.

Yes, I've done as you suggested.

19
Allright! Thanks to your generous directions I managed to get it working! I'm happy :D

Notes for anybody who will attemt something similar: You have to put the "Images by ID" utility in PVD's main folder, and when you run it, make sure you select "Remove existing images". I also selected "Set folder", not sure what that does though.

Also, the formula you want to use in Excel is "rename """&B:B&""" "&A:A&".jpg". I selected the entire C column, went to the edit menu, selected "replace", and replaced nothing with the formula, so every field gets the formula.

Hmm, if I understand correct, I need to rename all my posters to an ID number (without a title, right? i.e. 123.jpg). I'm still not sure how to do it, even with the example you provided, because I hardly ever used Excel before :-[

I have column A called "ID", and column B called "Front Cover". Robocop.jpg needs to become 23.jpg. How? ???
