Support / Set ID starting point
« on: January 13, 2020, 02:13:29 pm »
I use the ID as a reference to my discs. Utilizing different ID series (1000, 5000 etc) to designate locations.
Is there a way to set the starting ID number when adding discs?
Right now PVD insists the next ID is in my 1000 series. I'd like to be able to change this as needed.

Thanks
Den

I get the Subject error ( invalid class typecast ) when trying to import 'Beyond the Trek' from TheMovieDB and get 'IOHandler value is not valid' if i try from AMAZON [EN].
I have used either of these sources successfully for years.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Rick,

To conserve space I store my discs in binders. Sorting by Title is nice until you need to insert a new disc and have to move all the subsequent discs to make room. PVD is the perfect index / table of contents, why not use it... thus the idea to store the discs sequentially by a 'key' number. At first I considered a custom field to hold the numeric key and then found the ID# field almost by accident. It looks like the perfect key to this system. It is easy to add a new disc, enter it into PVD, write the ID# on the disc and put it in the last binder. PVD is perfect for searching for a movie, everyone seems to like it better than paging through the binders.

I was just looking for more information on how PVD creates and utilizes the ID# field. Most of my knowledge on how PVD handles the ID# has come from hacking... there does not seem to be much documentation on the field!

Using the PVD as an index for our TV series has been a challenge because they are not stored in the binders. I was hoping to hear a solution here on the forum but it looks like I will have to work it out on my own. So far the 'TV' prefix and re-using the number for a movie looks most promising.

I am sure others have similar storage / retrieval issues.... maybe the numeric key system will help.
Thanks for all your time...

Thanks for the quick reply. Your answer fits with what appears to be happening... makes sense.

Yes, do store episode data distinguishing a series in the database by the way they appear in the list.
The issues is in the physical storage. I store my TV Series discs separate from movie DVDs. Movie DVDs are in order using the ID #.
Where there is a TV series there appears to be a 'missing' DVD in the physical storage.  I am looking for a way to prevent this so it does not appear as though a DVD is missing.

One solution may be to reuse the TV series ID#s for movie DVDs. So I have ID# TV-7 and ID# 7. I know you can have multiple records with the same ID# so this just may work.

Your thoughts?

Support / ID Field Question

I use the ID field as an index to my DVDs. What effect does adding a prefix such as 'TV-' to the number? I'd like to distinguish TV series from my movie DVDs.
Any other suggestion as to how and differentiate storage location would be appreciated.

This started a month or so ago; when I create a new movie master everything is imported correctly but no images. If I them try to import the poster from Amazon.com I get the message no movies found.
They only way to get an image for a movie is to save the jpg from the internet and then add the file to the movie record.

Thanks you for looking into this,

Feature Suggestions / Some ideas....
« on: March 12, 2010, 02:05:47 pm »
Hi all,
Love the package, I am a Movienizer convert and glad i made the switch. Some ideas after hacking around with my meager 200 movie database. have it installed on a homebased server and shared throughout the house, neat.

Some ideas to ponder:

  • Display a help word or two when the mouse hovers over a toolbar icon... Edit, Save etc. Helpful for casual users.
  • Auto re-sort the movie list upon edit exit. I correct the title and then have to jump through hoops to get it sorted where it belongs.
  • display multiple images, a nice row across the bottom of the display, maybe make it an option, stacked or as a row.
  • customizable toolbar with more optionsFound this feature...Nice!
  • user definable fields... would like at least two... with filter / search options
PS if you ever decide to start charging PLEASE do it in a civil manor.... without warning Movienizer put a time limit / price tag on a newly released version and did not notify the user until the new version was installed and the time limit running.... nice marketing ploy!

Thanks for the great software

Support / Re: Connecting to database on server: Solved!
« on: February 14, 2010, 01:05:57 pm »
Yea!

The solution was two fold from the post "And parts of this recent thread may be helpful."
My attempts to attach to the server were always to a physical drive..

  • naming the server MUSIC from this suggestion "server:E:\Users Shared Folders\me\My Documents\Personal Video Database\movies.pvd - FB on a remote server, local path on server - WORKS!"
  • addding the TCP port 3050 exception to the Windows firewall on the server.

My connection now looks like this:

MUSIC:E:\Our Data\PVD-Movies\MOVIES.PVD

Where MUSIC is the name of computer where the Firebird database service is running.
"Our Data" folder and the sub-folders under it are shared.

As for the mapped drive not working, I meant placing the database on a mapped drive without using the Firebird server. I have not tried accessing a mapped drive using the Firebird server.

Thanks for all your help and this great program... I will now spend s bit of time updating my imported movies, learning the program and adding PVD to my other computers.

« on: February 13, 2010, 07:17:57 pm »
OK, I installed Firebird and verified that the service is running.
I entered the following into the Connect to server field:

192.168.1.108:E:\Our Data\PVD-Movies\MOVIES.PVD

"E:" is the drive designation used by the server to get to the file.
I can see the MOVIES.PVD file form the client via the path:

\\MUSIC\Our Data\PVD-Movies\MOVIES.PVD

BUT get the error attached.. any ideas?

The import from Excel went OK and I started to update the data without a hitch..

Thanks

I have been a long time user of Movienizer until they pulled a fast one and started charging for their latest update, without any prior notification. I do not mind the charge but just the way they did it. You install the new update and then find out there is a time limit unless you pay... very poor practice. To boot their license is for one computer only...

I thought I found a replacement with PVD until i discovered, and read here, that it will not work on a mapped shared drive. I store my movie data on a shared drive and access it from at least two computers. I did see that you mention a server for this purpose but can not locate any information on just what it does.... I find this a serious limitation considering how many households are networked and sharing information.

So for now thank you for this great database, I will continue my search for a Movienizer replacement.
