In relation to metadata lookup from JRMC, there are probably two points worth mentioning:

1) 5 or 6 few years ago an MC user generated a plugin to scrape music data from allmusic. This became quite popular was was pretty effective. After about a year allmusic send a cease and desist notification to the guy who developed the plugin and he pulled it (I know I would too)

2) Maybe 2 or 3 years ago, JimH mentioned they'd contacted the allmusic/allmovie people (I'm not sure if it was for music or movies) about implementing in MC. There wasn't a whole lot in the way of details, but the impression was that the asking price was a bit too high.

Personally, I'd love to see it. I'd pay a fair bit too :)

End of an era? They refer to 'deep content' on their website... as you guys have said, it seems a lot has actually been culled. It's still in the transition phase, so I expect a number of changes are still to come. Hopefully for better :P

The image names match the Title field in PVD exactly thanks to meticulous MC/PVD syncing ;) I think this will be my best bet.

Thank you Rick. I'll have a go at the steps outlined in that thread.

For me, at least, optional folder location/rules would be an ideal option - that way I could set it the same as my MC library and the whole thing could foreseeably be seamless. Alternatively, a right click on an entry or multiple entries in PVD with a "find poster in folder" would work equally as nicely (it could then just add any posters it finds in the same folder as the movie and save them however you have set it up in preferences).

Then again, this might be something where I'm the only one who would find it useful ;)

Hey hey - I've just upgraded to .21, updated my custom Allmovies file and everything's working flawlessly for me ;D So I just wanted to say a big thanks to Nostra and Rick and everyone who's been testing and making the program better.

I have a (small?) request though - since I've undergone multiple changes to libraries and file structure in the last few months, my poster files have gotten lost somewhere along the way (as I never stored them in the database - they were always next to the movie file but paths have changed). Would it be possible in a future release to add a feature "Search for poster in same directory as file"? I have each movie stored in its own folder with a single poster. This would save me possibly weeks of adding them manually...

Thanks again

Hi guys! Long time no see :) I've been away from the game for a bit... Now I have a few hundred new movies to catch up on!

I've been importing the IMDb Top 250 field + Votes into custom fields. I note now we can also download Technical Specs to a custom field as well. My question - what does the custom field need to be called? I've tried "Specs" and "Technical Specs" but can't seem to import the info.

Are there any other new fields which can be downloaded with the IMDb plugin that I may have missed?

Thanks

Well series or seasons I guess... once I have all the correct imdb URL's, I'd love to be able to just run the whole lot every month or so to update the information. You'd be surprised at how lazy I can be sometimes.

It's a good thing I don't have ER and Law and Order then :o
I do have a lot of Star Trek to look forward to...

I'm also getting the hand of importing all my TV shows into the program.
So far I have all my files imported and listed under correct Season/Episode numbers with titles from TheTVDb.

Like you, it seems the best way to do this was to enter just the series titles (ie no actual files or episode entries) into PVD first, then run the TVDb import plugin to get all the episode name and number listings (I find these much more accurate than IMDb), and finally, to do a file import. The program was reasonably good then at matching the season/episode numbers of the files to the correct entries in PVD. I still went through and manually checked them all, however!

I have another question about the TVDB plugin.  As far as I can tell, I can only select one season of one television show at a time for the TVDB plugin to analyze.  So, I'm not sure why I have to manually select the TV show, using the "Select Movie" box, for every episode I want to put through the plug-in.  Am I doing something wrong, or was it built this way on purpose?

Now I'm halfway through importing episode metadata from IMDb. I agree it is often a bit painful not being able to queue episodes from multiple series/seasons. I have to do it in small batches limited by season. Is there any chance of making it so Shift+Clicking across multiple series might also select the individual episode entries to facilitate lookup?

I just don't believe that good software development—or any creative process—can result by a bunch of people with different perspectives and preferences presenting unopposed ideas.

This is a really great point ;D Discussion among people with different baselines, goals and agendas is inherently prone to disagreement and wounded feelings. Sometimes this can lead to domination by some personality types who hold strong opinions and withdrawal from those who feel intimidated or lack the assertiveness to properly put forward and defend their ideas.

What is important is that opposition should be undertaken with the goal of stimulating further discussion rather than stunting it. This sounds like common sense, but novice users and those who visit the board infrequently may be put off posting just because of the tone of the thread or their relative inexperience compared to the power users who often dominate such discussions. In the end I think the art of diplomacy is key from both parties - recognition of the positive aspects of an idea or suggestion with non-confrontational exposition of problems and drawbacks is more likely to promote further discussion than outright disagreement. It's not simply about backing up assertions with logic, either, but attempting to identify the use case and perspective of the person you happen to be disagreeing with.

I'm usually pretty sensitive about how I'm perceived by others and, like many people, sometimes take criticism or outright disagreement to heart. Sometimes we need to be thick-skinned though and recognise that if our perspective or suggestion isn't supported by someone, it probably just reflects different needs and use of the program and not personal hostility...

Rick is very active here and I think this has been largely beneficial for the program's development. Personally I've had a bunch of problems since I started using the program and he's solved or helped with the vast majority of them.

So yeah... let's all play, but play nice :)

So do I now hit "post" or is this just another demonstration of my annoying strong mindedness?

"Post" is always a good choice ;)

That's fine, I just wasn't sure what the behaviour was meant to be... I'm still not sure how I'll go about series anyway!

At the moment....
  • I have all my episode files attached to the episode entries, but none to the series entry.
  • I have episode lists/release dates from TheTVDb, and episode info from IMDb.
  • I will get AMG info for episodes where it is available, but this is only really complete for popular US series

I plan to export to MC using PVDImport - but that will only pull the episode info, which is sometimes not as comprehensive as the series info. So I'm in a pickle :)

Still... it would be nice to find 'that episode of The Entourage which guest stars Jessica Alba' by looking up Jessica Alba in the filmography (PVD) or People pane (MC).

Thanks for the replies :)

Another one from me... when I click on a person in an episode, the episode/show does not come up under their filmography. If they are credited in the actual series entry then the series will be listed (with no episodes). So if John Smith is in an episode, he has nothing listed under his filmography... is this the way it should work?

Thanks Nostra will see how it goes :)

(...and wrong thread, but the TVDb plugin has, in the last few days, stopped downloading episodes for me too! ... it seems the more sources you end up using, the more you need to make sure the plugins are fit and working!)

Haha :) yes I'm just doing a test lookup each time I start it up... if it works once, it seems to keep working until a restart.

Surely others have noticed this?

Yes, I just got it again too...

Restarting the program fixed it.

« on: July 01, 2009, 09:04:51 am »
Hi there.

I was wondering if it were possible to achieve the following: I have series populated with all the episodes belonging to that series, downloaded from TheTVDb. All the episodes I have files for have the "Path" field populated. There are many episodes/seasons I am missing - naturally these episodes contain an empty Path field.

I wish to display all the episodes which I don't have files for (ie to see what I'm missing) - find movies removed from HD works well for this with movies, but isn't really helpful for episodes. It appears to look only at the "Series" level, and not at the episode level.

An example (* denotes I have a file and the path is entered into the episode reference)

American Dad
  Season 1
    1.1 *
    1.2 *
    1.3
    1.4 *
    ... *
  Season 2
    2.1
    2.2 *
    2.3 *
    etc

How could I get it to display only

American Dad
  Season 1
    1.3
  Season 2
    2.1

EDIT: I just realised I can do this with the filter "Show movies on removable drives". Thanks for being a few steps ahead Nostra ;)

Haha, just saw this! I certainly haven't come back an expert :( I went off and did a bit of reading and then applied my tried and tested "trial and error approach" and got it working. With help from patch's example. Only to come back and see Nostra solved it for me anyway ;) I have all my TV shows in PVD now and am just figuring out the best sources for the info. I prefer thetvdb.com's episode lists and release dates, but naturally IMDb has the most comprehensive metadata and the episode numbers don't always match up. Decisions, decisions.

And only four weeks away from finals :-\

Hello hello.

I've taken the plunge and have started looking at importing TV shows in PVD. I have all my TV shows in the file format...

E:\Television\Dark Angel\Season 2\Dark Angel - 2-03. Proof of Purchase

The default filescanner is picking up the show title as "Dark Angel - 1" and "Dark Angel - 2" etc and not picking up the Episode Name part of the filename. Before I go and to a whole lot of manual work, is there any way to set the filename scanner to pick up the season and the episode name if all my filenames are in this format?

I've been fiddling with the RegExps options for the file scanner to try and get PVD to pick files up as

<title> - <season>-<episode>. <eptitle>

So far I haven't had any luck. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be really grateful :)
