Scripts and Templates / Re: AdultDVDEmpire script
« on: October 07, 2013, 06:23:10 pm »
I think the ADE script on the Downloads page ought to be replaced with GazonkFoo's version.

I had been using the old version (0.1.1.something) but ADE made another change to their HTML that broke the old script. Basically, the script was searching for a tag that delimits some of the info it extracts from the webpages, but ADE started using two variations of the tag, so the script went into an infinite loop. :P I figured out how to fix the old script, but it's really just a band-aid. GazonkFoo's version handled the same search without any problems, so why bother with the old one anymore...

Looking forward to that myself.

Will this update automatically consolidate all of the identically-named "studio" entries I now have?

Here is a copy of the test database (as created in 1.0.2.5) demonstrating the problem.

Update: PVD RC 1.0.2.5 won't even open a copy of my database. It doesn't give any error when I try, but it shows an empty database (no records)!!! If I open the Statistics window, it tells me there are no movies and no people.

1.0.2.5 also will not load a much smaller test database I created in the older version (0.9.9.21) to test the apostrophe problem. The test database is just a handful of records, with a studio name containing an apostrophe. [Note: In testing, I managed to get 1.0.2.5 to give me an error message when opening this test file (which I submitted as a bug report in-app). However, if I tell the error dialog to restart PVD, it then opens the file.]

So I tried creating a brand-new test database in 1.0.2.5, with three movies, "Test Movie A" ("B", "C"). "Test Movie A" was assigned the studio "Normal Studio", while "Test Movie B" and "Test Movie C" were each assigned to a studio named "Apostrophes 'R Us" (note the apostrophe). After saving all changes, I went to the "View" menu, and chose "Group by Studio". Lo and behold, there were TWO "Apostrophes 'R Us" studios (both spelled exactly the same way) listed in the tree view.

Once I saw this, I then tried to edit one of the movie records to remove the apostrophe from the studio name. When I saved the changes, PVD then showed that the movie had TWO studios, "Apostrophes 'R Us" (with the apostrophe) and "Apostrophes R Us" (without it). Try as I might, I cannot get the app to remove the studio name containing the apostrophe. (Again, this is exactly what was happening in 0.9.9.21.)

So, yes, the behavior CAN be duplicated in the latest version.

Have you huys tried the latest beta? As I can't reproduce the problem there...

I've been holding off on the latest beta until it was out of beta...  :)

Guess I'll give it a whirl.

Support / Re: IMDB Plugin (People Information) stopped to run

Thanks for the quick fix, Nostra.

Not to be ungrateful, but the revised plugin still misses some things. For example, it does not import the available biography information (and I know it did before IMDB broke the old version). Also, on some actors and actresses it seems to miss some titles when importing the filmography ("merge filmographies" is set in preferences, by the way).

Two weeks since my last post, and nobody has any ideas???  :(

I really would like to solve this problem and consolidate all of the separate group-by-studio instances for the studio in question. But more to the point, I'm afraid that every time I add a NEW movie from this studio, PVD is going to end up doing the same thing again (i.e. consider the studio as a completely separate entity from the existing instances of that studio, despite the name being spelled exactly the same, and make it so that the studio name cannot be changed or deleted).

I don't understand what's causing this problem in the first place. Why would it matter if a studio name (or any other field) has an apostrophe? And why won't PVD allow it to be changed after the fact?

Talk / Re: PVD equivalent for pictures?
« on: August 20, 2013, 03:20:20 am »
I have to second that WhereIsIt? recommendation. In addition to a basic keyword search, there's also an Advanced Search where you can use expressions to specify all kinds of criteria, along with boolean logic like AND, OR, XOR, NOT. WhereIsIt? also has plugins to import metadata and thumbnails for many, many types of files (e.g. image dimensions and EXIF info for images). It even has a basic built-in viewer for images, although it can launch an external viewer of your choice per Windows' file type associations.

You can get WhereIsIt? at http://www.whereisit-soft.com/.

You might also look at J. River Media Center (http://jriver.com/), which has a media library with powerful search functionality. Media Center is more of a full-blown home theater application (including a "10-foot interface" mode for use in the living room) than a simple catalog tool, though, but it does work with image files along with everything else.

Neither one of these tools is freeware, though.

Talk / Re: How big is your database?
« on: August 20, 2013, 02:49:39 am »
I'm curious...

With this number of people, you're obviously not using the option to Show people added from movie credits. They're initially being added as invisible records, then you're doing something to make the ones you're interested in visible. With 1,759 movies, there's likely in the order of 30,000 people in your database—many more if you're not restricting the number downloaded (e.g., actors from main page only).

So I'm wondering if you have any routine for making the people you're interested in visible and downloading their information. I understand this might be simply clicking on people in Movie view if and when you're interested in them. This will make the one selected visible, and switch you to People view where it would only take a few seconds (hopefully) to download their information. In other words, they could be added on an "as needed" basis. On the other hand, you might use some systematic approach, like adding the director and "starring" actors each time you add a movie.

I use the other approach of using the option to Show people added from movie credits, and then regularly downloading information for all the people added since my last update. I'd like to eventually provide a description of both alternatives and their pros and cons in the Help Documentation. And you might convince me I should switch to your method. I find the people I'm really interested in tend to get lost in a sea of 33,000 people. :-\

Just now realized you were talking to me, LOL.  (The quoted number of movies was my first clue ;D)

Actually, I DO use "Show people added from movie credits". So, all of the actors credited in the titles I'm adding ARE visible in People View. If you're wondering why there aren't more people in my database, it's probably because the pool of actors working in the genres I'm tracking with this database simply isn't very large... but many of them are very prolific, appearing in hundreds of titles. And most of the movies only credit a handful of actors, so there are usually less than half a dozen added per title, tops.

My typical workflow goes something like this:

  • Add a movie with new movie master OR auto-scan inserted DVDs (I burn all my movies onto DVD-Rs, up to six per disc, prior to importing into PVD).
  • PVD automatically imports movie info (including the list of cast members) from the Web.
  • PVD also automatically adds the credited actors to my People View (due to "Show people added from movie credits"), if they weren't already present.
  • I click on each actor in the Movie record to make sure they were added correctly to People View. In some cases they are added under the wrong name or alias, and I have to correct it. (This part is a bit of a pain, as "correcting" means going back to Movie View and editing the Actors list to reflect the correct name so the movie's title gets moved to the correct People record's filmography.)
  • I prefer to maintain a semi-complete filmography (even movies I don't have) for every actor, so I use my web browser to search on IMDB for each NEW actor to see if the website has a record of them, and if so, copy the URL to PVD's People-View "URL" field. Then I do an import to get the filmography. I could just import without checking IMDB in my web browser first, but then I run the risk that the wrong actor might be chosen from several similarly-named people/aliases found on IMDB. Again, a pain, but at least I only have to do this once.
  • For actors who were already in my database, I just refresh their People View info from IMDB to update the filmographies (I already have the correct IMDB URL for them from when I initially added them). In some cases, I will do this in batches, several people at a time.
  • By the time I'm finished importing a batch of movies, I'll often have spurious People records due to the incorrect names/aliases that were added from the import plugins. They're easy to find, because after the corrections I made above, they will have no filmographies. I group the People View by Career, and any listed as "Undefined" get deleted with CTRL held down.

There's really more to it than this... adding screen shots to movies, photos for people, biographical info from several sources, etc. But this is the gist of it.

P.S. - up to 3023 (visible) movies, 5238 people, and a 1.42GB database size now. (Sadly, I'm getting new movies faster than I can catalog or watch them. Broadband Internet makes it too easy!) :P

Yes! Someone else has this problem, I'm not just losing my mind!!! ;D

I realize this is an old thread, but I'm having the same problem as Joe.

Using an apostrophe in a field like Studio seems to cause PVD to create an entirely separate internal record for that studio, so that if you switch to Tree View grouped by studio, you see multiple groups with the same studio name, one for each movie assigned to that studio. And once a movie from the studio with the apostrophe has been added, the studio cannot be changed or removed... edit the movie and clear the Studio field, then click save, and the studio comes right back. Change the Studio field to something else entirely, and PVD acts like the movie has TWO studio names, the original (with the apostrophe) and the one you tried to change it to. Delete both studios from the movie record and the one with the apostrophe comes back again!

I now have 44 movies from the same studio, and every one shows up in its own separate group when "grouped by studio". I can't find any way to get them all grouped together under a single "studio" the way they're supposed to be.

I don't know how long this has been going on, but I suspect it's been awhile. Using PVD 0.9.9.21.

Any idea how to fix this?????

Feature Suggestions / IMDB plugin: archive footage
« on: August 11, 2013, 01:51:40 pm »
Hi,

Would it be possible to add an option to the IMDB plugin, which would let it import "Archive Footage" titles for People, in addition to their main "Actor/Actress" filmography? For that matter, an option to include "Self" titles might occasionally be useful. (Both of these should remain optional, chosen in the plugin's configuration dialog, for those users who don't need this information.)

The reason I ask is that, some of the people I add to my database have almost as many, if not more, titles as "archive footage" as they do regular titles. And just today, I ran across one whose IMDB page ONLY included "archive footage"... there was nothing under "actor/actress" so the plugin didn't import anything.

Thanks.

In addition to what Ivek23 said, I would suggest you use the "view page source" function of your web browser to examine the target site's HTML code. (In recent versions of Firefox, the "page source" function is in the menus under "Tools/Web Developer".) This will let you get a feel for the structure of the page(s), which your script needs to parse to extract the desired information.

Also be sure to study some of the existing PVD scripts for ideas on how the various functions work.

Good luck to you.

Hey Gazonk,

It's great that you've decided to pick this up! For awhile, I was trying to maintain the original ADE script (updating for ADE website changes)... but not having written it myself, I always felt like I was just stumbling in the dark. ;D

First joc pitches in, and now you. Thanks!!!

Feature Suggestions / Re: File scanner - Change path
« on: July 13, 2012, 11:37:41 pm »
Added to the TODO list

Good to hear.

The whole "scan movies" dialog could be a bit clearer about what happens if PVD detects a movie title matching one already in the database. I often find myself adding movies that are from different studios but have the exact same title. Through trial-and-error I found that when "Change path" appears as the action in the scan results, I have to change it to "add new movie", set the regular "title" field to something like "movie name (studio)", and CLEAR the "original title" field, in order to avoid accidentally overwriting the existing/older title in my database. IIRC, forgetting to clear "original title" leads to the older record still being overwritten, even though "add new movie" was selected. There needs to be an easier, less ambiguous way to do this. (Changing the action to "add new movie" really should add a new movie record without my having to do the other steps I listed.)

On the other hand, I also sometimes find myself trying to add movie files that actually are duplicates of older ones, and I really only want to keep records for one set, so I wouldn't want handling of duplicate titles to be completely automatic either...

Feature Suggestions / Image viewer improvement
« on: July 13, 2012, 11:17:16 pm »
Hi,

When viewing an image in the "full picture view" mode, it would be nice to have "previous image" and/or "next image" buttons, if there are more than one image in that section. This would be very useful in any record field that can have multiple images, e.g. posters, screenshots, actor photos, etc.  Ideally, these buttons would only appear when the mouse pointer hovers over the full-sized image.

(I apologize if this has been suggested before. I'm too lazy to do a search right now, hehe)  ;D

Okay, I know I said I wasn't going to be working on this script myself anymore, but there were a couple of bugs in joc's last version that were... well, bugging me.  ;D

I fixed the one Ivek23 reported (where 'a href="' was showing up in the middle of actor URLs). I also got rid of garbage "/>" strings from the movie descriptions (the way I did it isn't terribly elegant, but I don't feel like completely rewriting that part).

Bumped version number to 0.1.1.2.
