They'd feel obligated to wade through all the answers before they could ask a question. Sort of a naturally enforced "RTFM!" Grin

i'm not suggesting that people shouldnt post here,
but if we know that the answer is already in the wiki - refer them to the wiki rather than referring them to an existing forum entry or typing the answer out again.
This generates interst in the wiki as a source of how to do stuff and the forum as a source of discussion.

I see DocuWiki can import TikiWiki, and export PDF and HTMLHelp. So it would be possible to convert the wiki to a PDF manual or a help file. That might work for a one-shot conversion, but is probably too tedious a process for keeping those things up-to-date. Besides, there doesn't seem to be much interest in developing the wiki and keeping it up-to-date.

Getting users to use a wiki is always going to be tough to start with. It has to have the information in it to start with.
I spent a huge amount of time doing a wiki dump (uploading info to the wiki). Then when people asked me something  - i tell them to check the wiki. Now they check the wiki first before asking me.

From experience, to get the wiki going, a data dump is needed, and instead or as well as updating the forum , the wiki is updated.
When someone asks a question they can then be referenced to the wiki. Even if it is unformatted, if the info is there people will start to use it.

Docuwiki is ok. For database stored wiki mediawiki a good choice ( my preference is for pmwiki as i am familiar with it, it has heaps of options and good user base )
Check http://www.wikimatrix.org

The manual could be a link to export to PDF on the wiki. PDF file gets dynamically created.

I'm not suggesting anyone would want to write a help file,

The wiki I created for work (pmwiki) has - "Export to PDF" module (optional install)
Perhaps pvd wiki could have an export to PDF module added.
Not sure if tikiwiki has the option - i'm sure it does.

This way you could create a manual automagically from the wiki.

i voted yes.
i'll add a caveat.
this should be optional.
i do not agree that users should have to change the way they think to use a particular piece software.
All software should be adaptable to users needs. As long as a changes dont hinder or affect the way other users use software. Change can only be good. Software that doesn't meet the needs of end users is destined to fail.

At the end of the day - Nostra is the developer he can do whatever he likes. If he likes the ideas put forward and is willing to implement it, then great. If he does not want to make changes - then bad luck, deal with the software as is or change to something else that meets your needs.

even in my relatively small community there is a reputable shop that assembles and services computers.
I guess im lucky where i live. we are not a big city, but have heaps of choice for computer dealers.
it is ok going to Dell or other vendors ( i bought a Dell Laptop), but know what you are buying.
Hit the forums and see if ther are issues.

You seemed to indicate there was some way of integrating it with DOpus. Are you referring to simple shell integration, or is a script available?

When/If you get Teracopy installed  ;).
Click on More button,
then Menu button. Inside Menu button, Select Options.
In here you find information on how to integrate it into Dopus and also Total Commander.
Also other options to integrate into windoze shell.

I never rely on out of the box stuff. Especially software. First thing I do is reinstall everything to the way I want it.
Usually I mount a separate partition as a folder and point all my personal info to it.
My setup is 2 sets of drives striped in raid.
1 raid set has:
Main C drive partition - Holds all program files.
Data partition mounted under c: drive as C:\Data\ (This hold all personal program DATA)
2nd Raid set has:
D:drive partition - This holds swap file and temp files are also pointed here.
Storage partition  mounted under c:\ as c:\storage - This has tv shows, programs for reinstallation etc.

When ever I do crunching or moving of data, I always try to move the data between the 2 raid sets.
eg dvd rebuilder extracts video data from c:\data\movie location (raid set1) and saves modified data sets to d:\temp (raid set2)
Then after crunching it saves final video_TS structure from d:\temp (raid set2)  back to c:\data\movie location (raid set1)
This way there are no bottle necks caused by the system reading and writing to the same volumes.

All applications are installed to specific locations.
eg
Utils\security\Virus scanner
Apps\DVD\Videodb\

That way I can find stuff easily.
I also use acronis home image to backup system regularly with a few rollbacks. This is separate from personal data (mail, videodb database etc etc).
(It is the first program that gets installed (even before drivers.)
I install windows - Install acronis. - Back up my system with a "clean windows" image.
Then create progressive images as I install stuff.
If I get a virus or some crappy software stuffs my pc up. I can be back and working in about 10 mins.
Data is backed up separately and I don't bother with sotage as I can always get it back from other locations.

Dell sucks BTW - they buy the cheapest possible hardware they can at the time. You can have two identical models with completely different hardware inside. I like to build my opwn systems from scratch. Even if you get someone else to put it together, every single componant is specified. The advantage of this is you get a "feel" for hardware. You can quickly figure out if issues are caused by hardware /drivers or crappy software. I always specify everything from the case down to the version of memory.
It is a legal requirement here that all electronics have at least a 1 year warranty so i don't have worries about warranty issues etc.

It looks like I'll have to wait until McAfee figures out it doesn't contain a trojan—it won't allow it to be installed. Cry
One reason (of many) why i don't use MccrapforaFee,. Lots of false positives.

I don't have issues with copying files—why might I need this?
Its really (really) fast. If you copy multiple files it will queue them up rather than copy them all at once.
Lots of choices on how to handle copies, ability to pause etc.

I use next episode for tracking episodes.
it really comes to life when you register and add tv shows to your watchlist and use "stuff to watch" link.
I use it to track releases for download. - Marked as watched after Download

I use next-flick to track movies i am interested in getting. More as a reminder system of what I want. Movies are removed after I have seen them (The "whats hot" feature is good too)

MRQE is cool 8)

If you use directory OPUS (even if you don't) Teracopy is the best copy program there is.
Look for script to allow teracopy to run within DOPUS (go Amiga) :) - im showing my age now  ;D

Does Episode World do miniseries/specials? - eg Torchwood Specials - it does.

It is, after all, a database. I suppose Firebird has more "overhead" than the file system, but I don't know why it should make any significant difference. Do you?

Don't know what i don't know :)

Maybe we can do performance tests based on:
http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php?topic=1668.0
Person with the biggest one wins ;)

or we could compare hardware and database size.
then have movie lookup races - That sounds like fun

Maybe add size as well.

Mine has 632 movies
0 people (they can't act anyway - hehe)
64 Megabytes

If people want images this big and Databases that are 100G + in size with performance issues...

Would it be worthwhile implementing thumbnail view which references the image?
Similar to how xbmc or movie collector work. - keeps the database small and fast and larger images only referenced when user clicks on them / exports them etc or ability to have images external to database - preferences/folders/image folders

Why do people want images this big anyway?

:)

while not entirely relevant to your problem,
Have a look at database fishing tool - http://daft.sourceforge.net/

Code: [Select]
Nostra would you be willing to change pvd_classic skin to have "aka" section use this.
Use what???

Sorry Nostra,
I should have made myself far more clear.

i would like to limit the "Also known as:" field for movie entries.
When importing a well known movie, you may get 20+  "Also known as:" entries for the movie as it has been released in different languages. This pushes other information down and off the screen.

Some fields have a little "+" next to them (such as writers,producer,actors) to allow a summary ("+") or expanded ("-") list.
I am trying to get the "+" button in against the "Also known as:" field for movies.

I modified your skin to:

Code: [Select]
<row>
 <column width="120" halign="right" valign="top">
  <fieldlabel field="aka"/>
 </column>
 <column>
<aka/>
 </column>
            <column>
<human category="0"/>
 </column>
</row>

This produced the desired results :)
I now have  a little "+" next to "Also known as:" field

im assumming the <human category="0"/>
 produces the "+" - but i'm not sure if it is the best way of doing it

I love your default skin and would like this to be included as a default for future releases.

Begging your humble indulgance, i would like to see this made as a default for this skin :)

PS thanks for the info on skin tags - GREAT  ;D

Feature Suggestions / Skin tag
« on: November 18, 2009, 05:28:03 am »
Hi,

I'm assuming that tag provides the little + symbol to expand and shrink lists.
      <human category="0"/>

is this correct? what does the category="0" bit do?
what happens if i change it to a 1 (i did this and could not see any difference)

Nostra would you be willing to change pvd_classic skin to have "aka" section use this.
I have movies where they have been translated into many countries and the aka list pushes the other entries
down. having aka list shrunk would be nice option.

ie
Code: [Select]
 <row>
  <column width="120" halign="right" valign="top">
   <fieldlabel field="aka"/>
  </column>
  <column>
<aka/>
  </column>
            <column>
<human category="0"/>
  </column>
 </row>

Also is there a list of skin tags (and what they do).
i would be willing to write a "how to" but i have to understand it myself  :D

Hi Nostra,

1. Maybe you just do not see the 5th digit? (make the field bigger in the Skin file)

It was skin length.
Changed this and can see 5 digit id.
Is there a way to make this (field lengths) dynamic based on the amount of data?

i havnt found a way to filter this only.
Especially if there are other urls (from allmovie for instance)

if you know a way to do this, it would be appreciated.
