Support / [SOLVED] How are movies stored on Hard drive??
« on: June 11, 2010, 11:33:53 pm »
Now the price of Hard drives is comparable to DVDs - I have decided to store my collection on Hard drive.
I am still deciding how I am going to store it.

eg Drives per Genre, All movies in one directory, subdirectories per Genere etc etc.
( I am interested in knowing how others store their media on Hard drives and how they then catalog them in PVD).

This is response from Ivek23 in thread - http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php?topic=1981.0
With me, the media database
Code:
to an external hard disk arranged by category.
Example:
    Action
    Comedy
    Western
and
     Rest..

In PVD, I have the custom section done custom field Movie Categories and manually confirmed one of the categories of films that I have an external disk.
Arrangements may also be in the File Information.

Feature Suggestions / Import PVD database
« on: June 11, 2010, 07:32:46 am »
Hi Nostra,

Small feature request (maybe)  ;)
Would it be possible to import (merge) two pvd databases? (and possible export)

Now the price of Harddrives is comparable to DVDs - I have decided to store my collection on Hard drive.

I would be creating separate databases to test functionality. I would like to be able to import best version into my main database at the end.

The ability to import a database would also be useful for adding new collections.
eg have 50 or so movies, import into a new database, fix anything that needs fixing and when happy with results merge into exisiting database.

 :)Thanks for a great program:)

+ tons of other features

xbmc for streaming to tv.
supports library functions, music, weather, + other apps.
NB: I am running it on original xbox.

both xbmc and vlc support subtitle files .svc

You could possibly drop the txt file created by export into teracopy or unstoppable copier.
teracopy supports command line.

eraCopy Command Line (v2.0+ only)

TeraCopy.exe Operation
  • Source Target [/SkipAll] [/OverwriteOlder] [/RenameAll] [/OverwriteAll] [/NoClose] [/Close]

        * Operation: Copy|Move|Delete|Test|Check
        * Source: File or folder
        * *Source: Path to filelist
        * Target: Destination folder

    Examples:

        * TeraCopy.exe Copy "D:\My Documents" F:\Backup
        * TeraCopy.exe Copy D:\Video.avi C:\My Documents
        * TeraCopy.exe Copy D:\Data F:\Backup /OverwriteOlder /Close
        * TeraCopy.exe Move *C:\Temp\filelist.cmd C:\My Documents /OverwriteAll /NoClose
        * TeraCopy.exe Test D:\Video.avi
        * TeraCopy.exe Check D:\checksum.md5

There's absolutely no justification for the assertion there "should" be "zero" rating. As a rating scale, there's nothing wrong with it starting at 1. It is, in fact, far more sensible than what you suggest. Using stars alone, there's no practical way to distinguish between NULL and 0. And there's no reason to rate something 0 when you can just as easily decide 1 has the exact same meaning. It's also obvious most users will find it perfectly intuitive the way it is. With a 0 rating allowed, we'd be forever explaining the distinction between "0" and "unrated."

Code: [Select]
Enter Devil Advocate ModeThere is nothing wrong with having a rating scale starting at 0.
If a movie is a real stinker 0 is perfectly valid.

null and 0 are different.
0 is a value - by definition - the value between + and - numbers
null is not populated. ie the field in question is empty. ( an invisible character eg "space" is a value and does not meet "null" criteria ).

I can see merit in having a rating system starting at 0 and null.
eg.
a movie is a stinker would be 0.
I haven't given this movie a rating yet would be null
Both should be independently searchable.

perhaps if the movie is unrated " there is no spoon " err - there are no stars (displayed).

Code: [Select]
Exit Devil Advocate Mode

Friend of mine had great success exporting from Movie Collector into Ant and then from Ant to PVD.
He had 3500 movies.
Hope this helps.

i agree with rick.

there are plenty of off program stuff to resize images etc.
to me - i d/l from sites that have decent image quality.

If i ever needed super quality images then i would use manual download/ resizing processes to make sure it suitred my needs

Looks like full version supports  removing files etc from list:
From their home page:

Free version
    *  Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives.
    * Pause and resume file transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.
    * Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer.
    * Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files.
    * Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual.
    * Full Unicode support.
    * Windows 7 x64 support.

TeraCopy Pro

    * Copy/move to favorite folders.
   * Select files with the same extension/same folder.
    * Remove selected files from the copy queue.

    * Get free updates and priority support.
    * More features coming soon!

unstoppable copier from http://www.roadkil.net/index.php is quite good as well.

(btw: how can i remove files from such a list?).

Click the more button - then highlight what you want to remove - standard ctr /alt controls apply for selecting multiple files.
right click in window for options - Select remove or hit the Del key

(*) small problem: when I started a few dozen copies at the same time, the last seems to not have seen a running process and thus started automatically, but below 20-40 parallel copies, it always worked perfectly :-)

You can drag and drop onto an existing teracopy process and it will add files to be copied to the end :)

It doesn't really matter what sort of help system there is (IMO)
But users (especially new users) suffer from a lack of a help system.

A single large html file or PDF is simplest to implement.
F1 opens the file.

An context sensitive help file could simply reference the relevant wiki page. Just need to make sure page names dont change.

also note .chm files are becoming more and more frowned upon due to securty risks the pose. A lot of systems block execution by default.

How are you capturing the wiki topics?

I edit  each page and copy /paste wiki text into pmwiki.
It needs some modification as the markup language it not exactly the same.

Quote
Do you know if it's possible to download the wiki topics as HTML files?
Yes - each page is its own html file and can be linked to.
I guess you could use - download website type software.

The file I posted is all the individual pages pulled together and dynamically "published" as one large html file.
This can then be saved/downloaded - converted to a PDF etc.

Unfortunately I don't have hosting facilities. I'll have a hunt around and see if I can find something.

Is this intended to be different than what I suggested here? If so, why would this be preferable?

Just trying to think outside the box.
If nostra can develop context sensitive help system that we can populate, that would assist in developing a help system.
Dont really care if it is hover help or (context sensitive ??) F1

I have been playing with dumping wiki into pdf or htm format.
It is a bit easier for me to use pmwiki rather than tikiwiki.

see attached (not finished) output. (sorry about the format - this is quick and nasty)
That could be a start of a downloaded help file.

may go some way to providing a solution.

I have dumped part of the wiki (menu structure) into pmwiki with a view to producing a PDF file.
(not as easy as it sounds)  ;D

Hi Nostra,

Would it be feasible to have an inline help function / help hover function.
Something like a "?" that when selected provides a hover help function for different parts of PVD.
This could / should be populated with info from users (so you dont have to do it)  ;)
Perhaps it could reference a text / xml file for info that could be user populated.

This would go some way to providing a help system.
