Have you tried criticker.com ?

Yes, http://www.criticker.com/profile/hyomil.  Biggest problems:
1. No support for TV shows nor plans to.
2. Titles for foreign-language films can't be set to display the English translation instead, making them practically impossible to recognize.  So you look to the thumbnails, which are very small and not even of the movie posters.  If you could do searches using the IMDb ID, this would help, but you can't, despite the fact that all their movies have an IMDb ID on their page.  If anyone knows of a search engine that allows searching for substrings in URLs within pages, please post.
3. You have to fill out a form to add new movies, including all the actors, when they could easily just import them from IMDb.  listal auto-imports IMDb's data when you enter an IMDb URL.  I made a new post about this here: http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php?topic=2063.msg10421#msg10421

It does have the auto-updating Probable Score Index and Taste Compatibility Index going for it, though.  I made a post on the forum pointing out features listal has that criticker doesn't and it was never posted, so that made me leery of their site as well.  If they add these features, I'll give them another chance, but I've been monitoring the RSS feed of their blog for over a year and there have been few changes.

There is also http://www.jinni.com/
 It is using a "movie DNA" type of system, in order to allow you to find movies similar to a particular one.

Yes, this is next on my ToDo list after examining the Allmovie tones, moods, and themes.  I'm going to compare those against Jinni's genes.  Interesting thing about them is they're usually generated not by someone manually picking them but by feeding a bunch of movie reviews into a Natural Language Processing program that selects the appropriate genes based on the wording of the reviews.  So the ability they have to Vote yes or no on each gene is quite needed and appropriate.

Talk / Entering movie ratings at multiple sites
« on: August 14, 2010, 08:29:24 pm »
In trying to compare different recommendation sites for movies, I've realized how much time it takes just entering all your ratings, so I'm making this thread to post the shortcuts I've found:

With listal, you can batch import them from IMDb very quickly, even faster if you use Web Search Pro and a macro program like Macro Express (There are free alternatives, but this one has an easy-to-use-and-remember interface and good context help through F1).  You
Quote
1. create a new private search engine in Web Search Pro with a Name like "Listal Batch Import" and URL
Code: [Select]
httppost://www.listal.com/user/import/imdb?sourceid=captaincaveman&imdb=2. use macro program to:
a) launch Quick Type Search with CTRL+Q
b) insert a little delay to give it time to come up
c) paste text using clipboard "Listal Batch Import" into Quick Type Search's "Search using:" field
d) type Tab key to switch to the "Search for:" field
d) paste your IMDb vote history URL (mine is http://www.imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=5808445)
e) type Enter

If you just wish to just go from an IMDb page to the listal page for it, you can use the KG-IMDb Greasemonkey script, which puts little links with favicons under the IMDb title.  Currently working links are Rotten Tomatoes (direct link based on IMDb ID), MoviePosterDB (direct link based on IMDb ID) criticker (regular search), Youtube (regular search), and others.  To add listal, which can also do direct links based on IMDb ID, you can add these entries to script somewhere next to the other search engines:

Code: [Select]
//listal - Watched
trackers.push(new SearchEngine("listal - Watched", "http://www.listal.com/addimdb/?imdb=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.imdb.com%2Ftitle%2Ftt%imdb-id%2F&collection=Add+to+watched+list", true, "http://www.listal.com/favicon.ico"));

//listal - Want to Watch
trackers.push(new SearchEngine("listal - Want to Watch", "http://www.listal.com/addimdb/?imdb=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.imdb.com%2Ftitle%2Ftt%imdb-id%2F&wanted=Add+to+want+to+see+list", true, "http://www.listal.com/favicon.ico"));

You have to pick to mark the movie either Watched or Want to Watch when you click a link on the IMDb page, but you can always switch your choice once you're on the listal page.

For searching listal using PVD's Web Search, you can use

Code: [Select]
http://www.listal.com/searchcombined/1/?query=%s%u
Then there's the IMDb Movie Collection Manager - by Futuros script you can use while browsing actor pages or using MoKA to display your ratings or the My Movies folder you've put a movie in .

Hyomil, while I agree with some, I have to say I am stunt at some of your lowest ratings.
 Rating films like "Being John Malkovitch" or "kung Fu Hustle" or "Ed Wood" less than 5 is a proof of a strong Charisma I would have to say!
 I have checked your favorite films on Listal and was doubly stunt to find "Angel-A" in your top 15.
 This would be at 1.5 I think in my own list if I had bothered to put it in.

I think you mean "stunned."

Kung Fu Hustle I was particularly disappointed with because I've liked other Stephen Chow movies (The King of Comedy, God of Cookery, A Chinese Odyssey:Part One, though not Part Two) and will continue to try more.  Couldn't even finish that one, though; found it forced, annoying, and unfunny.  Shaolin Soccer, the other of his released in the US, I gave a 6.  The others I saw so long ago I don't remember much about, but I haven't seen anything with John Malkovich or Johnny Depp that I liked.

We are such a varied community that I am starting to wonder about all these rating systems, are they really that useful?
 I knew that of course, and before discovering your choices I thought that roughly 75% of the times I could trust a good rating system (like rotten tomatoes for example) but now I am wondering if that number should be more like 40% or even lower, considering such deep differences.

I've found it discouraging as well.  On listal, there's a Compatibility Rating area when you go to the movies page on your profile where you can find the users who are most compatible with you ratings-wise.  I've yet to find anyone, though, without some "stunning" choices for their highest-rated movies.  If you Follow some of these users, though, you'll get on every movie page on listal a display of which of your Followed users has seen that movie, their ratings, and an average of all their ratings.  I'm thinking now its best to just Follow a bunch of users who like *some* of the same movies as you and go by the average of all of their ratings since for any given user there's always going to be movies that you rate 1/10 and they rate 10/10.  I don't see any way to do this on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix.com has a vast database of users, and has spent large amounts of money trying to develop an automated recommendation system.  I've given it 1800 ratings, yet I'd say its given me maybe 5 recommendations (out of several hundred) that I queued to watch, and I've seen many make similar comments.  I'll keep looking for something better, though.

Feature Suggestions / Re: Trailers

I must admit that I avoid to watch trailers, in order not to be mislead.

Now when I think of it, considering the time to find reviews and trailers for a certain movie, then to read and watch 'em, isn't it better to spend that time on watching movie itself? You'll spend less time to start watching it, and to stop if you don't like it, then for what I wrote in previous sentence. And I'm talking here about movies you already have in your collection.
???  Trailers are sort of meant to be misleading so as not to be spoilers; they don't spell much out, just give an idea of the general tone of the movie and the acting.  They don't often "mislead" about those.

For movies you've already seen, watching a trailer is a refresher of what the movie was like.  For movies you haven't seen, I've found trailers are an excellent way to quickly rule movies out.  I rarely dislike a trailer, then end up seeing the movie and like it.  I've gotten so once I've marked a movie Not Interested based on the trailer I'm very resistant to seeing it.  Sometimes I'll be undecided after seeing a trailer and mark the movie Maybe, in which case I may see it if other people recommend it.  If I like the trailer, I'm likely to watch the movie without further research, though its best to read reviews or at least check some statistics.  If there is no trailer at all, I'm reluctant to try something, even after reading reviews.

And watching trailers does save time:  3 minutes of time taken, say, versus having to find a movie download/rent/buy it and watch, say, at least 15 minutes of it to decide if you like it.

The problem with finding trailers is not ambiguity in the title (although that has to be dealt with as well), it's that they all get buried in the crap posted by users.

Here's a few more sites dedicated to trailers I've got in a search group in the Web Search Pro addon, though I haven't done many searches with them yet: http://www.movie-list.com/index.php, http://www.comingsoon.net/trailers/, http://trailers.apple.com/, http://www.alltrailers.net/.  Should be lots of HD trailers for newer movies.

I usually use Web Search Pro rather than PVD since you can't use the Title instead of the Original Title for searches.  For Youtube, I use:

Youtube Trailers - "trailer"
Code: [Select]
http://www.youtube.com/results?sourceid=captaincaveman&aq=f&search_query={searchTerms}+trailer
YouTube Trailers for anime - "amv" OR "pv" OR "trailer" OR "op" OR "opening"
Code: [Select]
http://www.youtube.com/results?sourceid=captaincaveman&aq=f&search_query={searchTerms}+amv+OR+pv+OR+trailer+OR+op+OR+opening
Doesn't include the year, but I haven't found that helps very often.

My personal experimenting isn't over, but it seems the most efficient way to get trailers is to simply use the IMDb URL and use the trailer links there.

IMDb used to hardly have any trailers, but it looks like they're getting better, though it still says BETA when you click on the link to the videos section.  I didn't realize one of the choices under the Update button was for adding trailers, but I just did that for a movie and I'll see if it gets added.  Took over 3 weeks to be added last time when I added a TV series.

Which one of us is greater time waster? ;D

I've rated 665 total, so 303/665=45%.  So at least I can still say the majority of the movies I watch I don't find a waste of time.   I've also marked 784 as Not Interested using a custom item after researching them, so I think of that as gaining back time I've lost. ;)

 Whenever I want to see the trailer of a movie, I use the following Web search from within PVD:

 http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%s+trailer&aq=f%u

 95% of the times, the first video found on the youtube website is the trailer I was looking for, and Youtube is RICH in trailers.
My success rate is a bit lower.  When Youtube fails, I use Google Video, which includes sites from many different countries.  The challenge there, though, is that there are so many streaming sites now (for Chinese movies, anyway) that stream the entire movie that you can't find a single one that's just for the trailer.  (You can sometimes tell by the duration of the video that's listed.)  So I thought I'd add the word "trailer" to the search--the Chinese version of the word.  The Google Translate translation of it didn't work, but I used Google Translate to translate a Youtube video where the text was all in Chinese and the word that translated to "trailer" was 預告片.  Haven't had much luck with it so far, though.

Best other site for trailers I've found is http://www.videodetective.com  And for saving them, the Video DownloadHelper addon for Firefox.  With Youtube, it enables you to save them at different quality levels up to 1080p (where available).  I would suggest saving the ones you really want to keep because videos frequently disappear from Youtube, whether because they're removed by the user because their account was deleted or for Terms of Service violation (which is particularly annoying when you're uploading a trailer that gives the movie free advertising).

I don't like watching trailers within the web browser either, in my case because there's tearing in the playback which I haven't been able to find the reason for yet.  Youtube does have a fullscreen option, though, that's similar to a dedicated player like VLC, minus the ability to open in fullscreen by default.  You can jump backward and forward with arrow left and right keys (though the distance is 10% rather than a fixed duration) and increase or decrease the volume with arrow up and down keys.  And there's the "Always play HD when switching to fullscreen (when available)" option in Youtube's Playback Setup.

Posting just the most recent wastes of time is unlikely to yield many movies in common.

I also used to watch movies that seemed bad all the way to the end, but I've set a semi-arbitrary time limit of 20 minutes that if I don't like a movie by then I'll make myself shut it off.  Occasionally I'll go 30 minutes, but if I'm even thinking at all about checking the time, its a bad sign.  Also, I've got so many other things I'm excited about watching stockpiled now, so its not as difficult to give up on what I'm watching.  When I stop watching a TV series, though, I still like to mark the episode that I dropped it on, in case I want to come back to it, although I know I almost certainly never will.  On listal.com, a number of list-makers include the episodes that they dropped the series as if to say "Well, that was my breaking point; who could watch any more after seeing that?"

I also rate things with 5 as average and anything less than that being a waste of time to see; when choosing ratings below 5, its just a matter of choosing how much the film's redeeming qualities count for or sometimes wanting to reserve a special rating of dislike for other movies to convey just how awful they are.

Hyomil will be shocked by my rating of "Azumi", for instance ;)

Shocked that I gave it the exact same 4 rating? ;)  I did see the sequel Azumi 2, nevertheless, hoping it would be better, but gave that a 4 too.  (I have a 50-item list of "Females Fighting" movies I didn't like here and the ones I did like here.)  I like the star, Aya Ueto, though, and suggest the J-Dramas she was in Attention Please and Hotelier.  I'm always disappointed when good actors are in bad movies because then many will write them off and never see the good stuff they were in.  Occasionally, even good actors' acting is weak in some movies.

Quote
But, what deazo said, to know what is good, you have to know what isn't. ;D

Well, I've got you beat by feeling like I wasted my time with 303 movies.  Clearly I'm not very good at picking, but I feel like I'm getting better, though I'd have to start keeping track of the dates I view movies to verify that.  Part of the problem is I haven't found any reviewers I generally agree with, so I usually pick movies just based on the actors or what's popular (a particularly unsuccessful, yet hard-to-break strategy).  I plan to get all the tones, themes, moods, etc. from Allmovie.com, do some Advanced Searches, and see if I can find any frequent occurrences.

Looking through my lowest-rated movies, some I can't even remember, some I could say are just not my type (horror, gore, animated movies intended for kids, gross-out comedies, art-house plotless or surreal movies), while others still boggle my mind at how anyone could've liked them and when I see them as 10/10 in other people's lists, I find it difficult to take any of their other recommendations.

All movies rated < 5.  10-point scale

I gave The Cell (2000) a 1 (but I generally don't like horror movies unless they're humorous or there's more to them than horror) and agree about The Medallion (2003) and Elektra (2005).

Just discovered you can right-click on the plugins to bring up the option to disable future update notifications of them.  I'd like to do that for the kinopoisk posters plugin as well, but I don't see any way to re-enable the notifications once you've turned them off (which I'd like to do later when the next version of the scripting engine might allow it to work on non-Russian versions of Windows).

And one typo I noticed while searching for it: Under Preferences > Plugins, TheTVDB [EN], the title of the box that comes up when you click Configure says TMDB instead of TVDB.

Also, when using the TVDB plugin, the URL of a TV show's page is not added to the URL field like it is with TMDB (ex. http://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=72164&lid=7) and posters are sometimes not downloaded, like for the shows Flashforward  http://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=84024&lid=7 and Firefly http://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=78874&lid=7

Support / Re: IMDB plugin shows strange behaviour
« on: July 20, 2010, 08:50:48 am »
A new problem: when I import an IMDb User Review to a custom field for a movie that doesn't have any User Reviews, the User Review from the previous movie from which I imported information is inserted instead.  Closing and reopening PVD will stop this temporarily, presumably because that clears the memory of the previous movie I imported information from.

Examples without User Reviews:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1564983/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1525835/

I would post a log as well, but when I start the program with the -debug parameter, there's nothing under the Help menu about a log.  This is what I used for the Target field of my shortcut:

Code: [Select]
"C:\Portable Apps\PVD Portable\PVD_Portable.exe" -debug
Using v0.9.9.21, Windows 7 x64

Hmm, since the IMDb plugin is a DLL and not a script, I presume there's no way to examine it to see how nostra did it for the IMDb user reviews.  Have you noticed if any of the other Movie Information scripts are able to do the conversion successfully?

53
I've started importing the Allmovie reviews into a custom memo field, but there are no paragraph breaks like there are with the user reviews for the IMDb plugin.  I checked 2 reviews

http://www.allmovie.com/work/twilight-420151/review
http://www.allmovie.com/work/obsessed-433716/review

and both have multiple paragraphs on the website but are one long paragraph when imported into the memo field.  Any idea why this could be happening?

Scripts and Templates / Re: screenshots and cover size

Tall posters? Normal posters range in aspect from 0.67 to 0.75. It's not a difficult design decision to choose a column width such that the resulting height of such posters fits on screen. For unusually tall posters, it's a matter of preference, but I'd rather the width be fixed and the height scroll anyway. Your example is an obvious play off the "A Chinese Tall Story" tagline.

There are other examples, though not many.  The ones in the bottom row here are the only ones I could think of off-hand:

http://www.movieposterdb.com/movie/1442571/Gam-yee-wai.html

but maybe these are fan-made posters, done by maverick designers, or were intended for a special media/format other than a poster (real-life bookmarks, perhaps).  They have a 0.38 aspect vs. the 0.45 of the others, so it doesn't seem to be some new standard.  Since the normal aspect range is as you say, it should seldom be an issue.

Quote
As such, I think the effect is better when it has to be scrolled. It can still be opened in the viewer to see it in its entirety.

Well, it can always be interesting seeing different crops of images, but I was interested in maximizing the poster size while still being able to know at a glance that I'm seeing the poster in its entirety without having to scroll to check if there's more of it.  Seeing blank space beneath the poster achieves that, as long as the blank space isn't the same color as the bottom area of the poster, so I ended up putting a border around the image control column under the poster to create a makeshift double border that only borders the bottom of the poster.

Quote
a maxheight attribute ... might be of use in some less typical situations—like where a tab is devoted for displaying posters—and the column width is not the limiting dimension. But in these situations, there is the option to limit the height of the section the images are displayed in.

I haven't been able to limit the section height using the bare-bones skin code below.  Do you know of any examples where this has been done?

Code: [Select]
<section height="500">
      <row>
        <column>
          <section height="500">
            <row>
              <column valign="top">
                <poster autosize="true" />
              </column>
            </row>
          </section>
        </column>
      </row>
</section>

Another thing I've noticed about this is that posters have sort of the opposite limitation as screenshots.  You can autosize the poster to the width of the column the poster is in, but according to the skin manual, you can't specify a maxheight like you can with labels.  So tall posters may be cut off by the bottom of the screen unless you set the width of the poster's column to a low percentage that will reduce normal-aspect-ratio posters to a smaller size than would otherwise be necessary.

Talk / Re: Which player do you use
« on: June 03, 2010, 03:31:08 am »
I haven't tried J. River Media Center yet, but KMPlayer now has a ton of options.  I use BSPlayer for screenshots because its the only player I've found that enables you to frame-step backwards as rapidly as forward.  This is due to, when you frame-step forward, all the frames are stored in RAM, so you can instantly step back through them to pick the best frame.  Some other players enable backward-stepping but they're either slow or only step back to the previous keyframe.  (I use the ShuttleXpress jog-shuttle rather than the keyboard to make it even faster.)  You can also configure it to save both the timecode and the frame number in the filename of the screenshot.

I keep getting this message when I try to either do a search on the forum or edit a post.

I think he just wants a notification when current date = release date for one or more records.

I have notifications in my TODO list already.

Yes, that's right.  I was confused thinking of the Date Added field, which is not needed.

Should it poll the source continuously for releases for all movies in the database?

Running the comparisons once a day or at startup would be sufficient.  It doesn't seem like doing an Advanced Search with [current date] >= [release date] would be that slow, but if it was, PVD wouldn't have to poll every movie in the database--just those with data in the 'Release' field.  And PVD would know which those were because every time a date was entered into that field, an addition could be made to an all-movies-with-a-Release-date list and the polling could be done just for that list.

Quote
If VideoETA has only a "limited" database, where would the data come from?

It would be manually entered.  I'll sometimes check sites like asianblurayguide.com for release dates and enter them into the 'Release' field.

Quote
I'm not sure it's the best source, but it would be more practical to add the ability to import the IMDb DVD page. You could then import/update that for your wish items as needed, and then search those for the availability of DVD new releases.

Many of the movies/shows I watch have no IMDb page, and, if they do, they have minimal information and no DVD page at all.  If there is one, it may not be until well after the DVD has been released (because a fan did it when the distributor didn't find it worth the trouble.)

Quote
I import the Allmovies link to it's DVD page and save it as a hyperlink. If there are no releases, there's no link. If there are releases, the link takes me to a complete list of them. Each release in the list is linked to a page of details for that release.

Good idea.  I added the code Ivek23 pointed out to your AllMovie+ script and will start using it.  I'll also start including a link to the movie's page on dvdcompare.net (if there is one) in the Features field.

59
I'd like to see PVD use the field 'Release:' date of a movie on DVD/Blu-ray to automatically notify you when it comes out.  There could be a popup and/or a link like "3 new releases" you could click on that would display those 3 movies in the left pane.  (or just set View > Group by > Release)  If Release date = current date, then PVD would know to notify you; if Release date > current date, a message like "3 new releases" where the count would continue to accumulate as more release dates passed.  To stop future notifications, the user could either delete the contents of the 'Release:' field or uncheck the 'Wish' box.

http://www.videoeta.com is a site that does this by sending you an email, but they have a limited database.

Feature Suggestions / Re: Repeat last search
« on: May 14, 2010, 10:52:07 am »
It looks to me that it is pretty much the same issue we discussed there?

Thanks for the link.  I added rick.ca's possible solution as #4 on the list.  I knew the back button was already on the To-Do list but I see nostra is aware of the the rest as well.  It was mostly the ability to quickly repeat the last search with a single hotkey I was building a case for, as I could only find suggestions for the ability to save searches (that would be nice too).  I'll sometimes be in the middle of going through search results and, after the above procedure, forget a) what my last search was and b) which movie I was on.  rick.ca's suggestion looks the best now.
