Support / Re: Personal Video Database 1.0.2.7 MOD
« on: October 21, 2018, 01:47:36 pm »
any chance of getting this working with Firebird database that is hosted on a remote server? My PVD is running as such but tested this mod version and it could not load the database using "Connect to server...".

Thanks for the mod effort! Appreciate it.

Some news are also available at this link:

https://github.com/mgpw4me/Video-Database/wiki

at the rate this person is developing vdos, I think it will be done in another year or two.

Also, if this domain does expire, it will usually go into a redeem phase where the owner can pay much higher value to redeem back the expired domain. Only after another 30 days when redeem period if over that it is open to public. However, a lot of domain companies will buy the domain up for 1 year hoping someone will offer higher price to buy back from them. Let's hope they don't do that to this domain.

In an case, I do have a reseller account for webhosting. I can offer free webhosting for the new forum or anything related site.

Support / Re: creating and connecting to second PVD db in firebird
« on: January 17, 2016, 07:24:39 pm »
I found a way to do it. Here are the steps for those who wist to do the same thing.

1) create new pvd database file using File -> New... (create it in your local HDD).
2) Fill it up with a couple movies
3) Move the file to your server hosting firebird.
4) In firebird server, register new db and select this new PVD file.
5) Once done, you should be able to connect to this new file using Connect to Server... (<server IP>:/path/to/NEW.PVD)

Voila!!

Support / creating and connecting to second PVD db in firebird
« on: January 17, 2016, 06:00:01 pm »
I am using a firebird server to host my pvd database. The current db is now 18GB which I am finding it to be too large and risky. I would like to create a second pvd database and connect to that new DB now.

I have problem connecting to the second DB. I have create that database and named it pvd2016. However, I just am unable to connect to it. I keep getting error saying
"4: Your user name and password are not defined. Ask your database administrator to set up a Firebird login.
can't format message 13:98 -- message file E:\PVD\App\firebird.msg not found
Error Code: 152"

Anyone can help?

Support / status of PVD as of 2015

Looks like PVD development has slowed down to a halt right now.

We know nostra is busy with other things. But just want to know what is your plan for this great piece of software in the future? Are you going to leave it as is? Are you going to pass the torch to another developer? Are you going to start charging?

I understand the commitment it takes to develop a software like this. It is not easy and we appreciate all your hard word especially when the software is even better than some of the paid ones.

I have used a few of similar software and tried tons. The one that I was using before PVD was Movie Collectorz. It had to stop using it because of their major change of direction on using their own internal movie database. I then found PVD and never looked back. I have been using PVD for like the fourth year now.

This software might not be perfect but it does get the job done. There are a few bugs and usability issues but works better than other similar software.

I think we are at a crosspoint now that Nostra need to decide what to do with this software if he does not have the resources to develop it anymore. Get someone in to join or make it open source and so on. You decide. We will support.

Talk / pvd userbase
« on: September 24, 2014, 05:51:00 pm »
I have tested quite a number of free and commercial movie collection system and so far PVD is really the best. I came from movie collectorz.com but I migrated to PVD few years ago when collectorz started using their own database instead of relying on websites like imdb or amazon. This causes a lot of problem for collectorz users and some of them migrated to PVD. While PVD is not as streamlined as collectorz, for a free software and basically developed by one person, this is really a great software. I am sure if nostra have more time, we would have an even better product.

Anyway, I am just wondering why is the userbase for PVD so small. For a free movie collection software, PVD is right at the top in my opinion. Nothing comes close. And when comparing between PVD and other commercial collection software, PVD it at least top 3. So why? If there are more users, I am sure with enough donations we can at least provide some incentive to nostra to update more often.

i have just reinstalled my server into ubuntu 14.04. And I tell you..I have a tough time installing firebird.

Seems like there is a bug with the firebird package in this distro. It tried tons to install and re-install and firebird-classic, firebird-super and firebird-superclassic and still unable to install from the package.

So I downloaded the latest source of firebird-super and installed it manually. Eventually the firebird server starts to work. Now I am stuck in trying to connect PVD portable to the firebird pvd database.

I can get a prompt asking me for username and password but when I key in the username and pass (pvd/pvd) it just doesn't connect. Gave me an error saying user not yet setup and need to contact db admin and yadda yadda.

But already created the user pvd and tried connecting from FlameRobin and it works.

I am out of idea...anyone can help?

Support / Re: Import episodes from IMDB broken?
« on: March 28, 2014, 05:51:11 pm »
i don't know what happened but seems like the episodes are now in. I just went and check on the series again but somehow the episodes that was not there is there now. I am not sure what happened. Cause I did re-open pvd a few times during when there is problem. Seems like working now.

I just tried importing another TV series from imdb and after import, I need to press the save button (green check button) and the episodes will appear.

Is the importing of episodes from IMDB broken in the latest version? I already enabled importing of episodes in imdb settings.

I tried to update episodes in my existing TV series but it did not get any new episodes eventhough there are new seasons in it which I did no have.

Then I tried to import a whole new TV series with a few seasons. It did not import those episodes.

Something must be wrong. Anyone can confirm?

does running the db optimization help to reduce the db size?

just a suggestion to nostra. How about making those plugins easier for others to help? Using some sort of scripting language. I remember using movie collectorz and they uses perl for the plugins. Because of that, others are actually contributing to making the plugins scripts for imdb, amazon and so on. That would actually help to reduce the burden on nostra for things like plugins.

I know this is not easy to convert since the software is already being developed up to current state. Perhaps for future roadmap?

Anyway I am happy with PVD in it's current state.

still problem. Though it does not crash PVD anymore, it is somehow looping in downloading from IMDB.

Check out the attached screenshot.

from what I understand there are little difference between the two. The major difference is the portable store the configurations in pvd folder instead of the install version store them in user's folder.

However, I have tried using both to access my DB from remote firebird server. On one of the parallels (virtual machine) windows 7, pvd portable does not work while installed version of pvd worked.

So I guess there must be more difference in both version than I am aware of.

I tried to import this movie: Religolous http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3810956800/tt0815241

And I my videodb does crash too. I am using pvd_portable.

Support / Re: What is your PVD file size?
« on: December 27, 2013, 06:41:29 pm »
I have 3177 movies. That is collection of over 10 years. I migrated from other movie database software before settling on videodb. Only 40% of the movies have screenshots. I store 30 screenshots per movie. Added with 1 cover for each movies, that's a lot of files.

just problems from spammers. nothing that a moderator can't fix. this is common with free forum software.
