Support / Re: Firebird Authentication?
« on: December 14, 2009, 12:47:21 pm »
Are you running firebird as a service (administrator) or program?
If running as a program, is it running with administrator rights or as a normal user.

I have had problems using a database after it has been opened by another user / administrator.
See http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php?topic=1391.msg6171#msg6171

I forgot to mention that the DB is located on the server. The client (implemented in PVD) shall run on another computer.
I think You need to have the database file on the same computer that is running firebird (ie not accessed across a network). Options are

1) Stand alone PVD (with internal firebird) & Database file on same machine.
2) Firebird server running on a PC accessing database on same computer. Other local or remote users connect to firebird server.

Note in both cases database File is on same computer as firebird is running on.

I believe it occurs when you use a windows 7 machine running pvd client (connected to server) to access a multi-part movie on the server.
See http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php?topic=1586.0 for full description & interim solution

Has anyone tried to run PVD as a client running on another computer than the server?

Generally Firebird does not like having the database on a remote server.
Have you tried copying the database to the remote computer?

65
when i get my server. will have to redo all the drives??? or is there a setting in pvd that will find the new locations and keep all the info that has been downloaded and put in..

Tools -> Scan Folders for new movies /changed paths...

Will automatically update the file path field provided the file name does not change. This leaves all other fields unchanged.

Alternatively
Tools -> Preferences -> Folders -> Find - Replace

Can be used to do the same thing dynamically but this will have to be done on each machine / user.
Currently config file needs to be edited as "Replace with" field is not editable

if you know a way to do this, it would be appreciated.
It would be trivial with RegExps which PVD already uses in the file scanner.
I wonder if adding similar functionality to the plugin would offer a general solution?

Of course I have no idea what the implementation difficulty would be so don't know how practical I'm being :-\
I suspect it is sufficiently different to need to wait for a later major revision.

Just waiting for a user to document what they have found out ;)

While it is obviously true that nostra may be able to write it faster than a user. It is also a fact there is only 1 nostra but lots of users so the more that can be done by users the better overall for the project.

As a result, it will be appreciated by others if you document what ever you find by trial & error. That way others can add to it and nostra may even edit it.

The date modified field is updated if the imdb plugin changes smth... Without changes - no update...

Does anyone know if there is a better field to use when searching for records which need updating?
I sounds like "date modified" will actually do the reverse of what desired as choosing records update > x months ago will tend to select static records on imdb.
Perhaps a date last checked field should be added to the feature suggestion list

Feature Suggestions / Re: What PVD is missing is...

my only wishes about filters were that they are named according to what they do and that (as others also have suggested, including you)
....
It is also important that probably most users are no computer specialists, database managers, etc, and they should be given every opportunity to easily use the program in a way that seems to be obvious, eg suggested by some descriptions or labels, and without the need to adapt the program to something different first or having to learn about internal workings by reading in forums for hours. This is even more true when there is no manual which explains something so that you simply can say "RTFM" :-)

i am not suggesting that a manual is missing for PVD since (after some basic info) most functions are relatively obvious, but i would find it nice if also less obvious things would be changed to make them more obvious, especially if this requires no program change but only some different words on a label.

Actually there is a manual http://www.nimidia.com/pvd_wiki/tiki-index.php?page=PVD-Manual&structure=PVD-Manual
It is maintained by all PVD users.
Perhaps updating the filter descriptions sections would make it clearer.

If the labels are not intuitive what should they be?

(btw I don't use that part of the program so would prefer not to update that part of the manual)

IMO not commenting on threads I can see no merit in is a sound approach.

That way the thread dies if it truly has no merit.
On the other hand the thread may blossom if it has merit to others I was not aware of.
Listing my way of addressing a problem with in the current software constraints may help others in the immediate future but is clearly only one of many solutions.

like mum says. if you cant say anything nice - dont say anything at all  ;D
I agree most discussions are best advanced by positive suggestions rather than criticism of others' ideas.

I don't think it's a good idea to suggest there are "default" or "supported" formats by way of example.

np
I will leave it to your judgement then how best to direct none technical users to naming conventions which work with PVD

We could probably do that by listing (default) supported formats in the wiki.
Currently this aspect is avoided

That would just encourage the misconception the program is intended to handle any file naming convention one cares to use.
Not if it was listed as

PVD is designed to support...
I can in fact extract the required information if you use other naming conventions but you may need to manually edit the title during "scan folders for new movies / changed file paths" or modify the regex expressions in "Tools -> preferences -> File scanner". See ... for further details

My intention is we would document the default / preferred naming. Illustrating some of the flexibility in punctuation & capitalisation, but not covering every possibility as that is best done by reading the regex search terms.
Sorry I didn't make that clear.

I have all my moviez under \\filez\movies\ .
...
I found the "moviez on filez" item in the Network Places list and tried clicking the checkbox.

"C:\Documents and Settings\Nebol\Desktop\moviez on Filez refers to a location that is unavailable. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted yada yada..."

Would you mind clarifying what you are actually trying to do?
I'm guessing you have a file server called "filez" which has a share called "movies"
And on the file server this shared folder is located on the desktop of the file server user "Nebol"

Is this correct?
Can you access and play the movies from windows explorer?
What version of PVD are you using?
Are you having problems when scanning or playing the movies.
If it is a playback problem are you playing back on the same or different computer to the one the scan was done?
Have you entered any thing in "Tools -> preferences -> Folders -> Replace folders in file path"

This may help http://www.nimidia.com/pvd_wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Connect-to-server

The point is there just needs to be a consistent structure to the filenames so the regex can work.
We could probably do that by listing (default) supported formats in the wiki.
Currently this aspect is avoided

http://www.nimidia.com/pvd_wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Adding-a-New-Movie&structure=PVD-Manual

But I may have missed it as I'm having problems using the search function in the wiki.

The order data is presented from a program can always be controlled be the programmer in any general purpose programming language.
What varies it the effort required to achieve it and the benefit to the application functionality.

So forum discussions can usefully address the benefit to a variety of users of a feature suggestion. Anson has done a better job than past posts to elucidate the issues, & I thought deserved support.

As for the difficulty in implementing a solution, only nostra can judge that but firebird does offer some native support:
Case insensitive sorting has been added to firebird 2.1 http://tracker.firebirdsql.org/browse/CORE-972
There is also the ability to support character set ordering other than the default ascii order http://www.destructor.de/firebird/charsets.htm

Given nostra past comments I suspect he may consider it at the next major program revision, depending on other priorities, feature popularity and implementation difficulty.

Scripts and Templates / Re: Exporting Episodes to CSV
« on: October 03, 2009, 12:57:10 am »
- really useful would be such an export if there would be also a corresponding import that allowed for updating the (localized) title, flags and a file path after getting the series data with a plugin (eg from IMDB; eg for creating a new partial database or just to recreate everything if i do a "readable" backup to a CSV file), but probably any import which can currently be done would be for "main entries" only and not for episodes, is this correct?
See http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php?topic=870.msg5587#msg5587
Which I believe means nostra is encouraging us to add such functionality ourselves.
If you succeed, sharing your solution here would be valuable, as you are not alone in wanting to be able to save movie details to prevent repeatedly having to make manual associations.

78
Anson, your analysis of the problem is clear and thorough. I agree it is a deficiency in PVD which significantly impacts on the ease of use of its user interface. Improving the sort order presented to the user would be a useful enhancement.

It is true it has been superficially discussed in the past.
Sorting of data is done by Firebird, not the program.
Is rick.ca summary. Which I believe is misleading.
Firebird could be programmed to present the data in what ever order was desired. See http://www.firebirdfaq.org/faq244/
The valid point is it is not the default firebird sort order.

The primary purpose of the program is for managing downloaded data. For the relatively rare cases where data entry or the changing of downloaded information is required, I think the list behaviour is fine as is.
rick.ca This comment comes across as: "I don't want to use PVD that way so nostra should not waste his time doing this and instead do things which are important to me"
In the interests of encouraging broad discussion as opposed to argument, please consider first exploring other users perspective prior to writing it off. You never know, a new forum member may go on to make a valuable contribution to PVD.

Have a read of http://www.videodb.info/forum_en/index.php?topic=1168.0

The standard movie naming format is
<Movie name> (<year>) <mostly ignored stuff>

By putting the year first PVD sile scanner will have trouble finding the movie name.

Solutions
1) Rename your files. If you pipe a directory listing to a text file. Edit it in excel or other program into a sequence of rename dos lines, then run the bat file.

2) Modify your regex in PVD to recognize your format.

It normally uses
(?i)^.+\\(?P<title>[^\\]+)[^\\]+(?P<year>(19|2\d)\d{2})
or
(?i)^.*\\(?P<title>.*)\\.{0,2}\..{3,4}

You need something with the year first earlier in search order (BTW this is not tested, follow instructions in referenced thread to do so)
(?i)^.+\\(?P<year>(19|2\d)\d{2}) - (?P<title>[^\\]+)
