Support / Help Index
« on: February 13, 2009, 11:16:19 pm »
Please note a Help board has recently been added. Anything of value here will soon be incorporated into the Help documentation, and this topic will be deleted.

This is the recommended method for seeking help...

  • Review the Help Table of Contents for the topic you need help with. It includes fairly specific sub-topics, so there's a reasonable chance you'll spot one applicable to your question.

  • If you don't find anything that way, or the applicable topic has not yet been written, use the Search box on the Help board. It will show any hits in the Help documentation—possibly revealing something not apparent from the TOC. You can modify the search from the results page, review any page hit, and return to the results page.

  • If your question is not yet addressed in the help documentation, you haven't wasted your time. Modify your search by changing "This board" (i.e., Help) to "Entire Forum." The results will then include all posts with your search terms, including anything here.

  • Finally, remember that when you need help, it's often difficult to know what to search for. Don't hesitate to ask. And you don't have to ask here. You may post a comment or question to any help topic, just as you may post here. So if you don't find an answer in a topic you think should have it, please add a "comment" to that topic. Then we can answer your question, and revise the help topic at the same time! 8)

Opening Credits

This "Help Index" is a categorized list of links to helpful topics. Please post your suggestions for additions to this list. Provide a title and a topic or message link, and perhaps a comment that will help me categorize it. Please do not post requests for help here—start your own topic (after reading Read this first, of course).

If you don't see what you're looking for, use the forum's powerful Search feature (discussed ~here). :(

Most of the links on this page (marked with a "~") are to messages that have been lost. I have attempted to recreate them from my personal records. Unfortunately, those include only my posts and whatever I may have quoted from others. I'll mark those with a "*" and change the link to a post below. I have struck-out those for which I have nothing. :(

I thought this might be an easy way to import meta data into JRMC.

Hmmm. Seems like a bit of a stretch. I'm just looking forward to the JRMC Theatre View development finally getting to the point where I might make use of my PVD data.

You can only import video files, but you can play any file type. In effect, "play" asks Windows to "open" whatever file is in the Path name field. Windows does so with whatever program has been associated with that file type. The MP3 pathname would have to be entered manually to the field.

Multiple files entered in the Path name field are passed to Windows using a playlist. So you could, for example, precede a movie with some music—to set a mood, or give you time to pop the popcorn. Note, however, the files are ordered by pathname in the playlist, so the music will precede the movie only if it's filename is "before" that of the movie.

Now I have to ask... Why do you want to do this?

thanx rick.ca you konw what i want.

Perhaps, but nostra wants to keep it simple. While you may have a valid need for this, the program is for personal use and therefore most users have no interest in user access control. I think your only option is to use different shortcuts for starting the program with different access levels.

Quote
how to do read only switch?

You can "hide" editing functionality with -readonly command line parameter. To hide Settings use the -noconfig parameter.

The most convenient way to do this is to add the desired parameter to a shortcut for the program. In the shortcut properties, add the parameter to the Target box, like this:

          "C:\Program Files\PVD 0.9.9.4\viddb.exe" -readonly

That will effectively restrict access, but you will be left with the problem of restricting the use of the shortcut. How that might be done depends on your desktop environment and who is using the computer—which you have not described. If your users have to log on to Windows, you would put only the restricted access shortcut on their desktop. If everyone uses the same logon, you could provide a separate shortcut for each user or type of user, and, if necessary, force everyone to use only their own shortcut by password protecting them all using Password-It!

The simplest situation is where you want full access for yourself, but want to restrict access for anyone else. The cheap and easy solution is to use two shortcuts. For other users, put a restricted access shortcut—as described above—on the desktop. For yourself, create a normal shortcut, but assign a shortcut key and set the Hidden attribute—or save it somewhere other than the desktop. You would start the program using your secret shortcut key, while everyone else would use the shortcut.

I think what HSSBH wants is the ability to password protect the edit function. The readonly switch applies at startup, and applies whether or not the database is password protected. I have to agree the readonly and noconfig options would be more useful if they were password protected attributes of the database files. In other words, when assigning a password to a database, one would select the desired security attributes: view, edit and/or configure.

If HSSBH can trust his users, he can create a shortcut with the -readonly switch and ask them to use only that shortcut to start the program. If, for example, he's only concerned about other family members, he could put this readonly shortcut on the desktop and hide his own full-access shortcut. He could add a little more security by using something like Password-It! to add password protection to his shortcuts. If he has $10 to spare, however, it would be better to donate it here. ;)

Multiple movies editor strikes again! It makes your heart soar—until you realize it doesn't include the field you want to edit. :'(

To add insult to injury, it causes you to miss things like this: You can select multiple episodes (in the same season) and change the seen or wish status by using the commands on the Movies menu. ;)

As for Multiple movies editor, it would be nice if it would include all fields that might not be unique, but then it would still not include custom fields. I often wonder if it would not be better if it were just a simple dialog where you could select any field (regular or custom) and enter a value. Very rarely do I change more than one field at a time, which seems to be the only advantage to the current implementation. Also, it would be nice if the value box would include a drop-down showing all the current values of the selected items (i.e., whether or not they are list fields). Even if the new value is to be none of these, it's a convenient way to confirm exactly what is being changed.

I restarted my router and am again a happy IMP user after so many weeks w/o the service it feels like home

Please note you'll still experience the problem nostra has just found and not yet fixed—I assume the bug exists in both 0.9.8 and 0.9.9. When it happens, Google will ban you. I'm not sure how long the ban lasts—I see I'm still banned since my test of a little over 24 hours ago. So maybe restarting your router fixed some other problem, but I wonder if all you've been experiencing is due to this bug.

AFAIK, however, this bug consistently results in the "HTTP1.1 503 service unavailable" error. If you look in your log, you'll see this is a resulted of being redirected to the Google "sorry" page—the "ban." If you find this not to be the case, or you get invalid "No movies found" messages, please post your log.

Depends what is in the exported tag and how the functionality is implemented.

The functionality I'm referring to is the sharing of all the information for a movie, exactly as it appears in the source data base, and quite intentionally not depending on anything else. The simplest case—copying entire records from one database to another—I  would expect to be a straightforward Firebird utility function. But that's a technical matter beyond my understanding. If it had to be done as an export/import tag information operation, I'd be surprised, but I wouldn't care—I'm only interested in the end result.

Quote
The tag import/export idea is about getting the movie reference right...

...so once download sources for information and images have been determined, other databases sharing the same media files don't have to search for and determine this information again.

These are different features for different purposes. I suppose we could conjure up situations where they overlap, but I don't see any benefit in doing so. I think both would be useful.

Great. Now I have to watch Waterworld again—to try to figure out why I didn't hate it as much as the critics. :P

I don't have such a list, but I'm normally close to agreement with the IMDb rating, so...

Following is my Advanced search result for IMDb rating >= 7.5 AND allmovie rating < 5.

It's fun to watch a movie like August Rush, feel good, read some reviews, then feel bad about feeling good. According to Berardinelli, "August Rush isn't just a bad movie - it's an aggressively bad movie." I'd be really conflicted if Ebert didn't like it. :-\

1. August Rush (2007)
    Romance, Music, Drama
Should it be rated 7.5 or 3.0?

2. Bucket List (2007)
    Drama, Comedy, Adventure
Should it be rated 7.6 or 4.0?

3. Butterfly Effect (2004)
    Thriller, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Drama
Should it be rated 7.8 or 4.0?

4. Funny Games (1997)
    Crime, Drama, Horror, Thriller
Should it be rated 7.7 or 4.0?

5. Zero Kelvin (1995)
    Drama
Should it be rated 7.5 or 4.0?

6. Love Actually (2003)
    Romance, Drama, Comedy
Should it be rated 7.8 or 4.0?

7. Man on Fire (2004)
    Thriller, Crime, Action, Drama
Should it be rated 7.6 or 3.0?

8. Mr. Brooks (2007)
    Thriller, Mystery, Drama, Crime
Should it be rated 7.6 or 4.0?

9. Earth Entranced (1967)
    Drama
Should it be rated 7.8 or 4.0?

10. Elite Squad (2007)
     Action, Crime, Drama, Thriller
Should it be rated 8.1 or 4.0?

It seems like this is the same as "Tag export/import (like ID3 for mp3)" requested by patch.

The desired functionality might also be provided by the split and append/join features we've discussed before. If it's about sharing movie entries between databases (especially those of different users), this method is particularly appropriate. The tag import/export idea is about getting the movie reference right. The other user/database can then download whatever information they want. That doesn't help much if the point is to share the information that has been collected. The easiest and most effective way to do this would be to split (save in a new database) selected movies, and then be able to append this new database to another.

Nostra, you've indicated this is on your TODO list, but is it going to make it into 0.9.9? It seems my database has become too unwieldy for my tired old computer, but I don't even want to think about splitting it until I have the means to exchange records between databases. I'm thinking I could split my "Wish list" movies (about half) to a separate database, then move them into my main database as I acquire or plan to acquire them.

BTW, it occurs to me one of the complications you have to consider is the handling of custom fields. If a custom field does not exist in the target, would it be added, or would the data be omitted? I suppose another option would be to dump data from unmatched custom fields into the comments field.

If you do many searches google really blocks the queries. It seems like it is enough to wait a couple of hours to remove the ban.

And this seems to be true. As you can see from my last post, I could not work around the ban. When I tried the plugin now (for the first time since my last post), it worked fine. Apparently, the ban had been lifted.

So I ran it on a batch of movies, thinking that is the sort of thing Google is sensitive to. Sure enough, it found two posters, then returned the error on the third. But my log (attached) shows some odd behaviour by the plugin. After the first two movies, it executed the GET for the third 50 times in 44 seconds! No wonder Google banned me. :o

What do you think, nostra?

That's what I would have thought from reading the help page, but the plugin search is redirected first time, everytime. I wasn't doing any searches before, and the ban (if that's the problem) isn't been removed in time. This started 12 hours ago; three days ago it worked fine.

Doing a search from IMPAwards, I noticed the Google site search results are now embedded in the IMPAwards page, rather than a separate Google page. Thinking the recent site redesign may have caused this problem, I made a Web search based on the current search URL...

Code: [Select]
http://www.impawards.com/googlesearch.html?cx=partner-pub-6811780361519631%3A48v46vdqqnk&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%s%u
I saw some promise in the fact a partner id is now used, where it wasn't before (i.e., maybe referrals from partners are not banned). Indeed, the web search works flawlessly, while the same plugin searches continue to fail. So this seemed like the solution, but then I tried the search URL the plugin is using as a web search...

Code: [Select]
Plugin search:
http://www.google.com/search?q=allintitle:[Title]+Poster+site:www.impawards.com&filter=0

Web search:
http://www.google.com/search?q=allintitle:+site:www.impawards.com+Poster+%s%u

It works flawlessly too. It's necessarily a little different than the plugin search, but I doubt that makes any difference.

Since deleting Google cookies makes no difference, I tried the plugin with Anonymizer—still no change. The problem is the same in both 0.9.8 and 0.9.9. And with that, I'm stumped. I can't imagine how Google is banning queries specifically from PVD, without using cookies and without my IP address. :(

The Google "Sorry" page says:

We're sorry... but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now.

We'll restore your access as quickly as possible, so try again soon. In the meantime, if you suspect that your computer or network has been infected, you might want to run a virus checker or spyware remover to make sure that your systems are free of viruses and other spurious software.

If you're continually receiving this error, you may be able to resolve the problem by deleting your Google cookie and revisiting Google. For browser-specific instructions, please consult your browser's online support center.

Reading Google Help about this, it seems my IP address has been banned from making "automated queries." Deleting all Google cookies didn't make any difference.

This screenshot illustrates something I wasn't really expecting from the scanner. The subject file is a test for a movie that doesn't yet exist in the database. What's happened is it's been matched to S14 E06 of ER—the title of which is "Test." I right-clicked on Action and changed it to Add new movie, but it added the file to the existing episode anyway.

Perhaps the logic of the matching routine can made to avoid matching movies to series (and series to movies, if that is even possible). Also, it should be possible to change the action using the context menu (and it should do what you tell it to do!).

Try to make the plugin overwrite titles.

The plugins I selected with "Automatically import... Movie information" were configured to overwrite titles and year. When I run them directly (after the scanner update has removed the title and date), they work correctly. It appears that when they are used with the scanner, they are run first (although the information displayed is not updated), and then the title and year are replaced with "#S.E" and "-1" at the same time the file path is added.

In any case, if nothing is selected under "Automatically import... Movie information," nothing should happen except for the addition of the file path.

If you have all files of a series assigned to a main series record, you can right click the record and select "Organize files by episodes" to assign each file to it's corresponding episode.

Sorry, you have explained this before. You've finally filled-up my brain's ability to remember features. You'll have to get rid of some. So why do we need this feature, if the scanner is going to organize files correctly in the first place? ;D

Oops. Didn't notice that. That'll go nicely with my Review (memo) field.

Is it really so inconvenient to switch in edit mode?

Editing "in-place" is always much more convenient for changing just one field. Particularly so when edit mode expands all collapsible fields—requiring scrolling/searching to find the subject field. Furthermore, after a record is initially created, this one-field-at-a-time editing is much more common than situations where several/many fields are edited at the same time.

Here's an additional thought: If such a feature put the field in edit mode and selected all the contents, it would make it very easy to replace the contents of any field with the contents of the clipboard.

Welcome to the forum.

The first one is the possibility to have additional ratings...

Just to clarify...the ratings fields that are provided are imdbrating, orating and rating. Orating ("other" or "additional rating") can be used for any any rating source, and a caption for that source saved in oratingname (not by the user, but by a plugin or script). Rating is meant for user ratings, but could be used for anything else. In 0.9.9, you can sort, group and advance search using these fields. I think this is a sensible design for standard ratings.

To handle more ratings, custom fields would have to be added. Depending on the type of field used, it can be grouped and/or sorted. As far as I can tell, stars are not a "type" available to custom fields, nor is it a "format" that can be applied in a skin. Maybe this could change. As things are in 0.9.9, an additional rating field would best be handled as a select list, as this type can be sorted and grouped.

Quote
allowing fast edition of some fields by default

I agree, but for which fields would be "safe" to do so? For custom fields, this would have to be configurable.

Quote
setup shortcut keys to edit specific items of one record in the database

If I understand correctly, the shortcut would put just the selected (as indicated by cursor position) field into edit mode. I think this is a better solution than arbitrarily making some fields editable. I imagine this could be applied universally, and added to the context menu. In other words, you would be able to select anything, right-click and select "edit." One the other hand, for multi-item fields, the context menu currently applies to the specific item chosen rather than the entire field, so this might be difficult to implement. I hope nostra will consider it however—it would be a very nice feature to have.

Changelog:
-Feature: RegExp support and additional functionality for File Scanner and Organize files by episodes function

Is there a particular external RegEx reference we should use as a guide in creating our own expressions? I know very little about RegEx (other than it makes my brain hurt), but I assume there are different "flavours." Are there any special terms that are unique to PVD?

If the scanner is unable to match a file to an existing record, the title can be edited, but the only available action is to "Add new movie." It would be nice if it re-checked the database for a match if the user edits the title (and perhaps a "refresh" requested) so the "Update file path" action would be available.

When adding new episode files to existing series, the existing title and year are removed. Title is changed to "#S.E" and Year to "-1." This happens whether or not "Automatically import... Movie information" is selected (i.e., the problem can't be worked-around by selecting that).

What is meant by "Organize files by episodes function"?
