Feature Suggestions / Loading database when program is launched
« on: January 26, 2010, 04:07:06 pm »
Just a small suggestion...

Would it be hard to add a toggle option in Preferences that would cause PVD to open with no database loaded (as opposed to always loading the last-opened database), when the program is launched from its own icon in the Start Menu?

I want to keep several databases for different purposes, and just don't want PVD to open any particular one when it's launched from the Start Menu.

Naturally, double-clicking a .PVD file (or a shortcut to one) in Windows Explorer would launch PVD with that particular database opened, as usual.

Feature Suggestions / Collection Notes
« on: January 26, 2010, 03:41:28 pm »
Hi,

I'd like to see a feature added, which I would call "Collection Notes". This would be a freeform text-entry field in which I could write notes regarding the database as a whole (as opposed to individual movies or people). For example, one might use this to make note of which Web data source(s) were used for importing information/posters, what genres are included, one's rationale for using the Seen/Wish fields, and so on. If possible, it ought to support clickable links, in much the same way that the Comments/Biography/Description/etc. fields do now.

The "Collection Notes" would appear in a pop-up window, called up from a new toolbar button. The text would initially be locked and uneditable when the window first opens, one would have to click on an "Edit" button at the bottom of the window to actually make it editable (this would prevent accidental changes).

And there ought to be a toggle option in Preferences which, if checked, would cause the "Collection Notes" to automatically appear when a database file is opened. (it should be unchecked by default).

Support / Movie/Actor List scrolling behavior
« on: December 20, 2009, 01:33:15 pm »
Hi again,

I have an issue with the behavior of the left-hand pane's list of movies/actors (depending on which view I'm in). When the list has focus (click on a movie or person, the cursor bar is dark blue), I can use the cursor keys (Including Home/End/PageUp/PageDown) to move between records; however, the list does NOT scroll when the cursor moves out of the visible range of records.

For example, if I'm somewhere in the middle of the list and press the Home key, the cursor jumps to the first record, as expected... but the list does not scroll to follow it, instead remaining right where it was. I can then start pressing Cursor-Down, and view the second, third, etc. records, but the list pane still continues showing the same group of records in the middle of my list. I have to use the mouse to grab the scrollbar and drag it in order to find the area around the cursor.

Is there any chance of getting the movie/person list to scroll properly with cursor movement?

Feature Suggestions / IMDB People plugin request
« on: November 29, 2009, 11:25:52 pm »
Hi,

I have a request regarding the IMDB People plugin.

Currently, it imports the list of alternative names (AKA's) in the original IMDB format; that is, with the AKA's separated by two spaces and a vertical-bar character, e.g. " | ". (Example: "Jane Doe | Janet Doe | Jane")

Could the plugin be modified to replace this separator with a comma and single-space, e.g. ", " (Example: "Jane Doe, Janet Doe, Jane")

I never liked the visual appearance of the IMDB vertical-bar separator, and using commas instead would more closely mirror the way multiple data items are entered in some other fields (genres, actors list for movie records, etc.).

(I suppose this could be made into a configurable option in the settings for the IMDB People plugin, in case some people prefer it the od way.)

Thanks,

Support / Deleting movie duplicates
« on: November 11, 2009, 02:19:53 am »
Hi,

How exactly does the "Delete movie duplicates" feature in "Optimize Database" work? What criteria does it use to determine whether a movie is a duplicate?

I ask because I did a test run on a copy of my database, which has some 1100 movies in it. After optimizing the database with "Delete movie duplicates" checked, it claimed to remove some 400 movies... apparently including at least 100 which were NOT actually duplicates of anything! These movies disappeared entirely from my main list. (Good thing I don't do experiments like this on my primary database!)

Feature Suggestions / Search filter ordering
« on: September 07, 2009, 04:04:42 pm »
Hi,

In both the main "search filter" menu (the button to the right of the search box) and "Advanced Search", the list of available search fields is in a very particular order, closely following the order of the fields in the main window. But frankly, there are times when I wish the list was in alphabetical order instead, which would make it easier for me to find an item when I know what it's called.  Is there any chance of adding a toggle in Preferences to sort the search fields alphabetically?

Support / Text editing
« on: August 26, 2009, 07:42:49 pm »
Hi,

One thing about PVD that tends to annoy me a lot: When I go into Edit Mode and click in a text field (Description, Biography, etc.), if the field is not entirely visible (partially off the top or bottom of the window), PVD will scroll the window to MAKE the field visible (or at least as much of it as it can). But this has the effect of drag-selecting all the text between the point where I clicked and the point where the mouse pointer wound up after the scroll.

It would be nice if PVD wouldn't scroll the window like this.

Support / Embedded links
« on: July 06, 2009, 04:26:40 pm »
Hi,

Embedded links within text fields (the kind you make with CTRL-H) don't always work as expected, depending on what "type" they are.

The first few types available in the CTRL-H dialog (ID, Original Title, Title, Name, Translated Name) all work fine, since it's expected that they point to a single unique entry in the database.

But the Year, Genre, and Country types are essentially search filters... clicking on such a link invokes a search for the specified text in the specified field.  Trouble is, PVD does not switch to Movies View for links of these types that are created in People View. Suppose I create a link of type "Year" in an actor's Biography field, and give it a value of "2006". When I click on this link, it fills in "2006" in the Search box, and sets the search filter to "Year", then executes the search... but it remains in People View, where "Year" isn't even one of the available fields, and so finds no results.

What's more, I cannot easily reset the Search Box afterwards to its default behavior. I can click the "reset search" button to re-display all people, but the search filter selector remains set to "Year" (following my example) and I can't set it back to the default "Name + Translated Name + Alternative Names", at least not directly... I have to click on it and set it to something else (such as "Birthday") first, then change it back. (I suspect this is just a display issue... I think the "reset search" button really does set it back to the "Names" filter, it just isn't updating the label on the toolbar.)

Along the same lines, one would also expect the "Tag" link type to search for movies with a specific tag... but when in People View, clicking on an embedded "Tag" link actually causes an Application Error to occur. ("Tag" links work correctly when in Movies view, though.)

By the way: Exactly what does the "Anchor" link type do? I've never seen it explained anywhere.

Feature Suggestions / Links and Tooltips
« on: July 06, 2009, 03:37:44 pm »
Hi,

I have a small suggestion regarding hyperlinks and tooltips.

Currently, when you point at a link to a movie in a person's filmography, or at a actor in a movie's credits, PVD will display a pop-up tooltip with basic information on the movie or person (photo/poster, birthdate/year, etc.) But, it only does this for the hyperlinks within the movie credits or people filmographies. I would also like to see it work for "embedded" links (inserted with CTRL-H) within text fields such as Biography or Comments. For example, if Movie A's "Comments" field contains an embedded link of type "Name" pointing to Actor B, then hovering the mouse over that link should show a tooltip for Actor B.  At the very least, I'd like for this to work for links of type "Name", "Title", and "ID" (I realize most of the other link types are really nothing more than search filters).

Along the same lines, it would be nice if an embedded link of type "URL" would show a tooltip with the actual associated URL, so I can tell where it will take me if I click on it.

Feature Suggestions / Alternative names
« on: June 05, 2009, 05:40:44 pm »
Hi again,

I'd like to see the "Name"/"Translated Name"/"Alternative Names" fields in People View get some added functionality.

Suppose I have "Show people added from movie credits" selected in Preferences, and I add a new movie (letting whatever plugin applies download the credits from the Web). It would be great if PVD would scan the "Name", Translated Name", and "Alternative Names" of all existing People records for matches to each actor in the film credits, and display a list of matching People so that I can choose which record the movie ought to be added to.

This would be really useful for actors that frequently perform under multiple aliases. As things stand now, if a person appears in a movie's credits under a certain alias, but I have him/her in my database under a different name, PVD will merely create a new People record using the credited alias, ignoring the fact that I had the alias listed in "Alternative Names".

This could work both ways, too (assuming "Show movies added from filmography" is selected in Preferences): If I'm in People View and import an actor's filmography, and one of the imported titles already appears in my Movies list within a certain movie's "Also known as" field, PVD ought to ask whether the imported title ought to be linked to the existing movie or added as a new record.

Both of these features ought to be selectable options, of course, since they might not appeal to every user.

Support / IMDb import
« on: April 09, 2009, 05:01:36 pm »
Hi,

I've noticed a minor issue with importing from IMDb. When I'm in People view and import a person's filmography, I always use the "merge filmographies" option, so that the IMDb data is merged with any existing filmography I have for the person. Trouble is, there are many occasions where the IMDb import creates duplicate entries for movies I already have listed for the person. Now, I can understand this when the year of release listed on IMDb is different than what I had in my database, or the spelling is different, but that only accounts for some of the duplicates.

What seems to be happening is this: if IMDb happens to use different capitalization on a movie title than what I already had, then the import process creates a separate entry. For example, if IMDB has "Pirates of the Caribbean", while I already had "Pirates Of The Caribbean" (note the capitalization differences), then I wind up with two movies listed. In other words, the import process appears to be case-sensitive! (Note that if the capitalization matches, then no duplicate would be created.)

This frequently happens when I add a movie in Movie View with "New Movie Master", then go to People View and import from IMDb to "flesh out" the actor's filmography. If I happened to capitalize the title differently in "New Movie Master" than what IMDb uses, I'll get duplicate entries after the second step.

For what it's worth, I don't know if this is necessarily the fault of the IMDb plugin, or if it's an issue with the internal functioning of PVD.

Would it be possible to change the plugin and/or PVD so it either ignores upper/lowercase or automatically corrects it when merging filmographies?
